Comedian is an excellent documentary. It follows Jerry Seinfeld and a few of his coleagues around, showcasing their daily struggles to write new material and to perform well. It does a good job of conveying the emotions of the comedians featured in the documentary. By then end of the movie, you feel truly sympathetic towards the comedians and the hard work that they put in to make you laugh, to make you smile, and to lighten up your day. It's really easy to recommend this movie to any fan of Comedy, but most importantly, to any fan of Jerry Seinfeld. This movie adds another dimension to his character, and acts almost like a biography. On the negative side, this movie doesn't include as many performances as you'd like it to. While it does feature short clips of the comedians performing throughout the documentary, they are very short and usually 2-3 jokes in lenght. The Bonus Features tease you a bit by giving you Orny Adam's and Jerry Seinfeld's complete "Late Night With David Letterman" performances, but each one is only a few minutes in lenght. It would have been much better if they had included video of a few of their bad performances, and a few of their excellent performances so that aspiring comedians can take notes on what can make or break a good act. Overall, it's an excellent documentary. It does what it is supposed to do well, even a little better than I had expected. If you are looking to learn more about Jerry Seinfeld, you should definitely buy this movie. Aspiring Comedians should also pick this one up.Read full review
An interesting, informative and entertaining glimpse into comedian Jerry Seinfeld's re-assimilation into stand-up comedy after his sitcom days could have been more appealing without the obviously-too-contrasting Orny Adams personality injections. It's a shame, too, because Orny could be funny if he would just relax and fly by the seat of his pants instead of the nervous, neurotic manner he projects. In addition to the tour of highways and byways towards the ultimate appearance on Letterman's late show, the disc includes cut scenes some of which are as good as those which DID made the cut. Also, Jiminy Glick interviews with Jerry & Orny were worth including to bolster the video offering. If you've never been to a comedy club in NYC, here is the experience as close to being there without really being there.Read full review
Since I never watched the Seinfeld shows when they aired originally, I've been watching the syndicated ones over the last year or so and am in the process of buying the whole series on dvd. So I was interested in seeing more about Jerry and how his career is going since the series ended. I wouldn't have thought a whole lot about how trying (to put it mildly) it must be to do standup comedy, even if you're known as one of the best of all times like Jerry is. This dvd lets you get a different perspective on him and what it's like facing some of the issues a comedian has to deal with. But I loved seeing the interaction with his family and friends, and in business. Just confirming my belief that he is an extremely intelligent "business man", but seeing the really down to earth and caring personality he has as well. I was very pleased with this dvd, I've watched it several times and am glad that I bought it.Read full review
After watching Comedian, I realized how appropriate it would be as a guide for good teaching. The lessons Jerry learned and taught about humility, knowing your audience and respecting the art of comedy seemed to translate perfectly to many professions. The film also broke down a lot of stereotypes I had about the supposedly cut-throat community of stand ups. The film is excellent and the extra features are brilliant.
I originally saw this movie at the theatre and wanted to make sure that I had it as part of my personal collection. Jerry Seinfeld really brings home the ups and downs of being a stand-up and traveing on the road. I have been a nationally touring stand-up for almost 25 years and found this movie to be great in relaying the thought processes of a road comic and the need to find "just the right stuff". Kudos to Seinfeld on his tale and I highly recommend the film for those curious of the comedian's world and for it's comedy value
