    Sad but true

This is the true story of one of the unknown hero's of WW2. By 1942, England was on the verge of losing the war. The German U-boats were inflicting heavy damage on allied shipping bringing supplies into the country and England was on the verge of starvation. English intelligence got a big break when they received a captured ENIGMA machine, the secret coding device of the Nazi's that they used to direct U-boats to shipping convoys. The machine codes were considered unbreakable, and this is the story of the intelligent code breakers hired to break the code and save England. This tells the story of Alan Turing, a genius mathematician, who gave his all for his country and sadly was brought down by the same country he helped save. A great movie that shows that not all hero's wear a ...

  • Award winning!

This is a gritty, entertaining, enlightening and realistically feeling rendition of events surrounding the contribution of a man who would later be chemically castrated by his own government - which they now regret. Somehow, being remembered with your face on the English 50 pound note doesn't quite cancel out the depression and desperation that lead to his death. This movie delivers! Really worth seeing!

  • An Accomplished Film and Story

An excellent story and film. The acting was accomplished. The production values are very good. The story is one of a brilliant man who is asked to help solve one of the most perplexing problems for the British during WWII: He was tasked with cracking the code written by the German's Enigma encryption machine. He gathered some of the other brilliant minds in England at the time and together, led by our protagonist, did indeed crack the code. He has sometimes been credited with saving the war for the allies. However, he happened to be gay. And in England at the time, being gay was illegal. He was humiliated and went to prison. This was an indignity he could not bear. Leading to a tragic ending for a great hero.

  • one of the best WWII Movies factual and realistic.

great script followed the history and even Christopher looked real. Acting could not have been better. I felt I was in the rooms with them photography was exceptional. The flash backs were done in a way that it did not startle. I put this movie up to saving private Ryan, and the pacific. I have watched it three times. I also read the book so I was looking for details, they were there.

  • Display of an Amazing Work

I can only say great things about this DVD. I'd already read the book. Two difficult things to think about: 1. Once we the code, we had to balance what we did with it. Use it enough to drive us to win WW2, BUT use it less than it became apparent that we broke the code. If the Germans knew that we broke Enigma, within a week or so, they would have a revised version of Enigma in service. 2. Convicting ~ 49,000 British men of being homosexual (illegal in England from the 1890s to the late 1960s). This drove Al Turing to take his own life at age 41.
