Slow going at times, but powerful - great performances
I wanted to see this movie for a couple of reasons. First, because I liked the premise of it and second because I'm such a big fan of Adam Sandlers and I wanted to see him step out of his comedy roles and do some drama. He was excellent in this. He plays Charlie Fineman who lost his wife and two children in a plane on 9/11. He was Alan Johnsons (Don Cheadle) former college roomate and the two had lost touch for many years. One day by chance, the two are brought together again and Alan finds it really hard to accept Charlie as he is now since the loss of his family (he withdrew from the world and became very reclusive). Yet they rekindle their friendship and help each other out at times in their lives where they are both going through hard times. This is a little long winded in parts, but ... His wife is played well by Jada Pinket Smith. I enjoyed this a lot and am so glad I finally got around to watching it. It's very moving and anyone with a heart should enjoy this movie. I highly recommend it.

Not Your "Typical" Sandler Film - VERY GOOD/INTERESTING
Reign Over Me is AN EXCELLENT FILM!! Adam Sandler doesnt play his "typical" role, as there is pretty much zero comedy/humor in this film. It is very interesting, and very well written, and pretty mellow from beginning to end. Not too many "up's" or "down's" in this movie, but it will keep your interest. MANY GREAT FACES offering Great Roles! We enjoyed it and will definitely watch it again! We felt it was worth buying, although depending on your movie interests... you may want to rent it first to see if it is one you'll enjoy. WE RECOMMEND IT! Writer/Director Mike Binder presents a devastating portrait of "The 9/11 - Tragedy" as the vehicle of destruction for the main-character (Sandler) one man's life-implosion, placing his wife and daughters on one of the planes that slammed into the World Trade Center. One-Time Manhattan Dentist Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) loses his family in a blink, sending him on a seemingly endless downward spiral, laying waste to his world. (Although 9/11 laid tragedy upon every American - the film's portrait of one man's rise from it's ashes is a brave-portrait of the inner-hero of every survivor.) Another Dentist, Charlie's old college roommate Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle), becomes an agent of change when he runs into his old friend on the street one day and quickly realizes that something is very ... 'Reign Over Me' offers a tale of redemption and recovery from loss. The characters are sharply drawn, in this film laiden with wonderful performances. Charlie and Alan mule-about around Manhattan, making for an uneasy buddy film in which Alan is never sure where he stands with Charlie. One moment, they are best pals; the next moment, Charlie is ranting that "they" must have sent Alan to infiltrate his life. In an view of Charlie's mental sufferings, his character fits the narrative and reflects a deeply disturbed human being; in light of his tremendous losses on 9/11. Cheadle's performance provides a solid center; while Sandler is the true star of this film. In his first flat-out serious performance since 'Punch-Drunk Love', he channels Dustin Hoffman in 'Rain Man'. While Charlie's situation is dire, it is the circumstances one empathizes with. There is a well of anger in Sandler that is part of many of his performances, from 'Punch-Drunk Love' to 'Anger Management'. It is the one emotion that always rings true in the actor, and it does again here. Certainly, Charlie has ample reason to be so enraged; passing his days in life listening to the music of his youth as a way to hold back the pain of the present. But together Alan will seek the trigger in himself to rise from his own inner-ashes; and learn to live again; while learning he'll never need to forget. This Film is a Must-See !! And deserves much praise for it's courage in portraying 9/11, not in exploitation; but for the means of showing personal courage and healing. See This Film !! It's Powerful & Uplifting - As We Remember And Never Forget !!!! -- But Learn To Heal. Never Forget America !!!!

A very different role for Adam but excellent acting.
The acting was exceptional, and the story line was excellent. This is defiantly a tear jerker. My son is a Adam Sandler fan and collects all his movies. I have watched some of them and they are o.k. I am not a die hard Adam Sandler fan,this one made the cut. But I must admit other than being a little strange at times;in the end it all makes sense. You really feel for the character understand his position and would never want to be in his shoes. His co-star Don Cheadle is also an excellent actor. Reign Over Me
Wow, what a movie!! I never expected Adam Sandler to do such a serious role.. He was awesome!! What the survivors have to deal with after a tragedy (World Trade Center).. It was heart wrenching.. How he reverts back to before the tragedy.. He does not want to even think about his family... because it's too painful... He runs into his college room mate and develops a deep re-connection because he did not know his family... & he finally opens up & even finds a new romance ... and how some friendships last a lifetime!!Wow, what a movie!!
