Product Information

September 1939. As Warsaw falls to Hitler s Wehrmacht, Captain Alexander de Milja is recruited by the intelligence service of the Polish underground. His mission: to transport the national gold reserve to safety, hidden on a refugee train to Bucharest. Then, in the back alleys and black-market bistros of Paris, in the tenements of Warsaw, with partizan guerrillas in the frozen forests of the Ukraine, and at Calais Harbor during an attack by British bombers, de Milja fights in the war of the shadows in a world without rules, a world of danger, treachery, and betrayal."

"Beautifully written, powerfully imagined, and riveting as pure story....The book is a triumph." --Charles McCarry "Brilliantly imagined, vividly drawn, rich with incident and detail....The Polish Officer portrays ordinary men and women caught out on the sharp edge of military intelligence operations in wartime: the partisans, saboteurs, resistance fighters and idealistic volunteers risking their lives in causes that seem lost." --Robert Chatain, Chicago Tribune "[A] riveting 'pure' story...wonderfully exact...transcends the spy novel while delivering everything any fan of le Carré could ask for." --Robin Winks, The Boston Globe, "Beautifully written, powerfully imagined, and riveting as pure story....The book is a triumph." --Charles McCarry "Brilliantly imagined, vividly drawn, rich with incident and detail....The Polish Officer portrays ordinary men and women caught out on the sharp edge of military intelligence operations in wartime: the partisans, saboteurs, resistance fighters and idealistic volunteers risking their lives in causes that seem lost." --Robert Chatain, Chicago Tribune "[A] riveting 'pure' story...wonderfully exact...transcends the spy novel while delivering everything any fan of le Carré could ask for." --Robin Winks, The Boston Globe From the Trade Paperback edition.

  • Not like James Bond

Alan Furst is a master of espionage thrillers that take place in the tumultuous Europe of the 1930s and '40s. "The Polish Officer" is one of his best, following the story of a military man whose life is turned upside down by the German invasion of Poland. For most Americans, World War II begins with Pearl Harbor and focuses on things like the invasion of Normandy. Furst reveals the conflicts and intrigues that gripped Europe at the lowest individual level. The historic atmosphere he creates is raw and startingly authentic, as characters grapple with the mundane and the momentous all at once. This is not flamboyant spycraft a la Flemming's James Bond, but it also has a different flavor than Le Carre. Even Furst's minor characters are wholly intriguing and authentic (and you'll find them ...

  • Excellent history novel

This my first Furst novel and I can't wait to get to the next. He writes about an era just before and into WWII. He fills a gap of a period that has not been explored. There is a lot of back ally resistance against the evils of that era. And there are more than just the Nazis tobe worried about. Clever, thoughtful, and intense. These characters represent the heros of WWII that we will never know.

  • Another Alan Furst classic

I love spy novels and this is a classic.
