About this product

Product Information

In some respects the game is a simple one-great players can make it seem more so-less obvious are the complex factors that impinge on the fortunes of clubs. The result of any given match is thus the outcome of a multitude of decisions made not only by those involved directly in the game-players, coaches and umpires-but also club officials who have in the past made decisions about recruiting and player payments. Every football club has a history that shapes what it can do and how well it can do it. Only an interpretaion that takes these forces into account can explain Carlton's long record of success, on and off the field. This is that story. The fascinating tale of how the local team of 'the most enthusiastic football suburb in Victoria' became a professional, financially secure club in a national competition, a club that has won more premierships in the first hundred years of the VFL/AFL than any other. How its great rivalries with Collingwood, Richmond and other contenders have given football some of its grandest moments. And how its players, coaches and management have weathered internal and external storms to secure a history to cherish and a future to envy. Lionel Frost was born in Melbourne in 1956 but took eleven years to get to Princes Park. He has tempered 30 years following the Old Dark Navy Blues with a career in economic history, teaching at La Trobe University, authoring Australian Cities in Comparative View, The New Urban Frontier and co-authoring Cominmg Full Circle: An Economic Histoy of the Pacific Rim. The Carlton Football Club, formed in 1864, is one of the oldest football clubs in the world. There are some English clubs of similar vintage, but most were founded closer to the end of the nineteenth century. The formation in 1859 of the Melbourne Football Club and the codification of the first rules of the Australian game predate by some margin the significant events in the developemnt of British and Irish football. The English Football Association was not established until 1863, while the Rugby Football Union and the Scottish Football Association were formed in 1871 and 1873 respectively. The rules of Gaelic football were not codified until 1885. When a crowd of 12,000 went to Princes Park on a wet day in 1911, a reporter from the Argus was at something of a loss to explain why: 'Presumably every one of them had a home and a fire, and might at any rate have borrowed a book, but men, women and children stood out in the cheerless afternoon facing the bitterness of a southwesterly gale.' During the break, Barassi looked at the handball total on his statistics sheet.[He] had long regarded handball not simply as a means of getting out of trouble, but as an attacking me
