These were a great, easy to use GPS in their time. They are a bit outdated today, but still very functional for those of us who had these as our 1st unit. I bought this because of my familiarity with this unit. I had previously owned one but lost it overboard. [They don't float] Their weak point is the non replaceable, non rechargeable memory battery. Once the "Low Memory Battery" warning appears, they will not hold anything in memory. They can still be used, but will not hold waypoints, routes etc. in memory once you shut it off. Generally the memory battery is only good for 10+/- years and most of these units are older than that.

The memory battery is faulty it's not possible to replace, I still use it but you have to ignor the pop up warning.

The Garmin GPS 48 GPS Receiver is an excellent handheld GPS for the money. The manufacturer has installed many user-friendly features that make the first time buyer or the professional happy. They manufacturer has excellent customer service and many additional add-ons to make this unit an extremely versatile GPS to be used in town, on trips, hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking, four wheeling or camping. Suggestion: 1. One of the best ways to protect investment is to purchase a Protective Case for this GPS. You can find a top of the in line protective case that protects while allowing full viewing and access to all the features of your GPS unit. See a variety of cases at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2 2. Purchase cable accessories that allow you to upload or download maps and data from your GPS. Purchase a 12v auto charger so that you can always keep you unit charged before heading out cross-country. Purchase quality power and data cables at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2 3. Purchase an Amplified External GPS Antenna for the unit. The internal antenna is ok but will become intermittent in high buildings, cloudy skies and stormy weather. Purchase a quality, high gain remote antenna. See specification on 28dB and 55dB GPS antenna at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2 Cheers – Fis4herRead full review
This model is my favorite handheld GPS of many despite being out of date for many years due to its ease of use. I own several newer models which are more accurate, have additional features and much better battery life, but none are as easy to use on the fly. Unfortunately many of this model fail soon after purchase and Garmin will no longer repair them at any price. Memory battery seems to be the Achilles heel at this point. Be sure you have a more modern backup on board, but still a great GPS until it craps out.
I could not believe condition of unit. It's like brand new! I'm using as backup on "Seeker," my sailboat. GPS 48 will be going far into the Pacific. Very Happy. Thank you Ebay and to "Aviator1961" !!!
