About this product

Product Information

An extraordinary biography. A gallery of astonishing work. The legacy of a madman. Philadelphia, the late 1870s. A city of gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages-and home to the controversial surgeon Dr. Spencer Black. The son of a grave robber, young Dr. Black studies at Philadelphia's esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he develops an unconventional hypothesis- What if the world's most celebrated mythological beasts-mermaids, minotaurs, and satyrs-were in fact the evolutionary ancestors of humankind? The Resurrectionist offers two extraordinary books in one. The first is a fictional biography of Dr. Spencer Black, from a childhood spent exhuming corpses through his medical training, his travels with carnivals, and the mysterious disappearance at the end of his life. The second book is Black's magnum opus- The Codex Extinct Animalia, a Gray's Anatomy for mythological beasts-dragons, centaurs, Pegasus, Cerberus-all rendered in meticulously detailed anatomical illustrations. You need only look at these images to realize they are the work of a madman. The Resurrectionist tells his story.

Always happy with the Nile's service. Whilst dispatch can take longer than others, books are sourced at a great price from locations worldwide and from prior experience I know to order in advance. I ordered three expensive textbooks for uni, two weeks later they were dispatched and the next day received - all earlier than expected timeframe. Packaged very well, books intact. Great seller, updated tracking and items as described. A+++

A very interesting piece of fiction

A very brilliant work with full anatomical reference of muscles, bones, and organs of fantastic and mythical creatures. One half is the fictional study/biography of the "construction" and resurrection of several mythical animals, and the second half is several creatures illustrated fully to anatomical perfection regarding bones and muscles. Nudity involves anatomical illustration of breasts on some creatures such as mermaids, and harpy, but otherwise very appropriate for all ages.

  • Loved the story, loved the detailed illustrations.

A truly fascinating read. The story of Spencer Black is spotty, but the minimal entries about his life give a clear enough picture as the reader sees a character follow a path both dark twisted; like a more modern Victor Frankenstein centered very close to home. While the story is short, it is a good read that allows the reader to fill in the gaps in his/her own imagination. A good fantasy story. The other half of the book, more than makes up for the spotty story entries. Beautifully drawn anatomy pictures of mythological creatures the stories main character claims to have possibly once existed. If you love fantastic mythological creatures, this part of the book shows how they could have looked if they well and truly lived and breathed. A perfect book for anyone loving detail, and mystery.

  • Fantasy Anatomy

I bought this as a reference guide for my artist son. In my opinion it will help him improve his drawings of mythological and fantasy creatures. The artistry and attention to detail in this book is fantastic. Made me wish I had bought it for myself.
