One of the best 50 mm lense ever

The Leica 50mm f2 is perhaps the best little all purpose lens ever designed! It is an all-around excellent tool for your camera. Since I shoot mostly outdoor secenes and landscape, I always carry one in my kit when I go on a hike or trip. Also, I carry a fast 70mm lens as well. These two cover 95% of all of my shooting in color or Black & White, film or digital (Leica M, Nikon Df, and Cannon.) JPG

  • The only 50 mm lens I would consider owning.

This lens is a Leica foundation lens. Various versions of it have taken some of the greatest photographs in the history of photography. This version V is as sharp as a razor blade and has perfect contrast. It also has a sliding hood, which is invaluable for keeping your bag as simple as possible.

  • Simply the best.

This lens is the best for 35mm period! I like: Superlative definition amd sharpness, the best money can buy, Rich yet natural colours Consistency across the frame, Built-in lens hood, Build quality - my buy was mint +, Compactness, Timelessness (Works perfectly with Cameras from 1955 to 20xx) Value for money. Discretion - Works with compact rangefinder cameras you can put into a big pocket. This lens gives better results than the latest Nikon or Canon 50 mm, pro lenses. It is lighter than the latest leica M 1.4 50mm and a lot cheaper. Would like 1. an updated M3 to go with it with light measurement and ultra hi- res digital receptor 2. The eye and skill of Henri Cartier Bresson I bought it because I like excellent rendering and real sharpness and because pro full screen ...

  • Earns it Reputation

While I've only owned this lens for a short time, long enough to shoot one roll of Tri-X, I'm satisfied that it lives up to its reputation as the best, or at least one of the best, lenses ever produced by Leitz for the Leica M3. Solidly built, focus and aperture adjustment is firm and sure. Images are sharp edge to edge, at least in my experience of making moderate-sized prints. I've found it the perfect adjunct for my M3.

  • Excellent value

I just purchased a 50mm Summicron f/2 from the 1970s for my M9. The brand new Summilux f/1.4 ASPH version is hardly available and would cost in the $5000 range brand new on ebay. Mine was a small fraction of the price and in excellent condition. I'm sure there have been improvements but I doubt these would be noticeable under all the normal shooting situations. I didn't feel the extra 1 stop of speed was worth all the extra money For decades Leica has been making the worlds best lenses. Isn't that the whole point of the Leica system....to be able to make use of these vintage lenses?
