Yul Brynner stars as the legendary figure of the Bible in King Vidor's only contribution to this popular 1950s genre. When aged King David (Finlay Currie) has a vision from God telling him that Solomon should succeed him as ruler of the Israelites, David heeds His word. This angers his martial brother, Adonijah (George Sanders), who threatens to wrest the throne from his younger brother. Israel thrives under the reign of the wise king, and its success creates uneasiness among the powerful kingdoms of the region. The pharaoh conspires with Sheba (Gina Lollobrigida), granting her access to the Red Sea that she might beseige Solomon with her charm, thereby luring the ruler to his doom. Solomon is dazzled by the queen's beauty and quickly falls under her sway. As the king's attention is turned away from the Lord and the welfare of his people, the country begins to deteriorate. The Lord finally expresses his displeasure with the prevailing atmosphere of licentiousness by destroying the Temple of Jehovah. The chastened Solomon grasps the error of his ways, and a transformed Sheba decides to convert to Judaism. SOLOMON AND SHEBA is the great director's final film, and while it might not be up to the standard he set with DUEL IN THE SUN, THE BIG PARADE, and THE CHAMP, it has an undeniably entertaining camp value that makes it worth watching.

Dvd arrived quickly and well packaged and taken care of. The item was listed as acceptable and met all of my needs but here's a quick description of what I got: Some wear is visible on the plastic sleeve on the outside of the case. The inside leaflet was still there! The disk has about 3 very notable scratches, although none are bigger than about 2 centimeters. Little to no grime anywhere on the product. Great service!

    Wisdom and Beauty

    Wise King Solomon (Yul Brunner) becomes involved with the ravishing Queen of Sheba (Gina Lologrigida) in this epic motion picture adaptation of the biblical story of these historical figures. Lavish sets and interesting costumes combined with solid acting that portrays engaging characters continue to make this movie interesting and entertaining.

    Not quite!

    Given his magnificent performances in The Ten Commandments and the King and I, this Yul Brynner film unfortunately falls short of epic film proportions. The right elements are there - an interesting Biblical story line, great sets and costumes and a bomshell leading lady in the person of Gina Lollobrigida. Yet the mix clearly falls short and fails to stir any significant interest in the viewer. In the end, the film quite simply falls flat on its face. The scene depicting an easily swayed Jewish crowd stoning the Queen of Sheeba to death can only be described in one word: CHEESEY! But hey, if you want to see Brynner with a head full of hair, this is the movie for you!

    Goodness wins in the end!

    Although the story line didn’t strictly follow the Biblical narrative, it was very entertaining. I liked the way that the Queen of Sheba turned her heart to the Lord.

    Well Worth Watching

    Although taken from the Bible, this is a beautifully written love story. It is part love story and part history lesson beautifully written and realistically portrayed by the actors. The background music is beautifully scored. The colors are incredible throughout the movie. This is a movie worth watching again and again.
