Additional Information
Approaching the legendary German classic 1922 film NOSFERATU: EIN SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS by F.W. Murnau with his own unique sensibilities, Werner Herzog establishes a link between himself and the classic days of German cinema and in the process crafts a lush adaptation as well as a classic in its own right. Stark, symbolic cinematography and intensely stylized performances create what Herzog refers to as a different plane of reality, injecting the age-old tale of Count Dracula with a modern sense of mysticism, desire, and wonder.<BR>Frequent Herzog collaborator Klaus Kinski portrays the Dracula character with a silent intensity, tingeing the vampire's inhuman monstrosity with a deep sense of pathos and longing. Completing a stellar international cast are Bruno Ganz (a regular in the films of Wim Wenders) and French film star Isabelle Adjani, both giving subtle yet compelling performances as the formerly happy couple who fall prey to Dracula's lust for life and love. From the opening image of rows of openmouthed mummies and the repeated motif of a bat in slow-motion flight to beautiful scenic shots of European mountains and beaches, NOSFERATU is a visually stunning film, presenting visual tableaus taken directly from the original as well as those of Herzog's invention. The extreme stylization of the film recalls Herzog's similarly hypnotic and haunting film HEART OF GLASS--creating a wholly original film, that despite its differences maintains a strict and loving faithfulness to the original.

However not happy with the delivery company - they left it outside my house just after 11am - I didn't get home until 3pm - why didn't the delivery driver put it behind the bin ?? Luckily no one stole it !

  • Horrific masterpiece

If you are lucky, you will find the two-disc version of this deeply disturbing modern classic from Werner Herzog. One version is the so-so dubbed English version but the one to see is the 12-minutes-longer German one (with sub-titles). Klaus Kinski, as Count Dracula, looks scarcely human and makes dear old Christopher Lee in the same role as scary as a lollipop lady. There is something of the grave about his every move. Highlights are a crewless ship arriving with the dead captain tied to the wheel and a vast number of rats keeping him company and a long procession of coffins as Nosferatu goes about his evil work. A masterpiece of horror.

  • Nosferatu the Vampyre (Werner Herzog)

If this had been left as Herzog created it, it would have been arguably one of his best films. However the English version was so badly dubbed (and still is) that it flopped at the box office, and this disaster was said to have driven Herzog to give up this type of film and to go into documentary work for many years. However if you shut your ears to the dubbing, and listen only to the music, or think of it as a silent movie, it's magnificent. The scenes with Kinski as Dracula are perfect examples of the old Commedia del'Arte mime tradition. Dracula's death scene is a triumph. Where Dracula colonises the world with Death, there are overt references to historical Nazi colonisations of Europe, and the bringing of death. But here the evil and its destruction are hypnotisingly beautiful. ...
