    Excellent zoom

The camera is easy to use and produces quality images. For me the main drawback is it's inability to shoot in RAW format. However the 2,000 mm zoom makes it a standout. I have shorter range lenses that cost more than four times what I paid for this camera. This is the camera to take on holidays. It's fairly light, not expensive and has an incredible zoom range without the need to carry additional lenses.

    Not sure its worth it.

Much bulkier than the P600 it was to replace. My dilemma now is....do i sell the P900 I just got or my older P600. which is quite large enough? I travel with a pocket Lumix TZ90. 35x zoom. Sure the P900 got a much bigger zoom but how often do you really need that. A leopards head photographed (handheld) across a waterhole with full zoom on the P600 was very grainy and the lens would keep trying to focus on the leaves on a twig next to the head....I think the P900 is worse at that and in macro it wants to focus on other things around the subject too. The P900 should be much better at zoom with better stabilizers but I'm yet to find out. Other times it won't focus on things you zoom into. You zoom into a flower which is centered and in focus, you press the shutter the camera refocuses and ...

  • Empowering for the non-expert user

This camera is a great learning tool. The automatic features allow experimentation with good screen detail that help the user understand what settings suit what environment. I found the telescopic control ring around the shutter button a bit fiddly to use but manageable with practice. The camera is nicely balanced when held in the correct grip, the telescopic control operates smoothly and the auto focus effective, My sister-in-law was so taken with it when I was initially experimenting that she went out and bought one herself. My only concern is that there are a lot of options to learn to drive aspects of the camera manually. That is a good thing though and I am looking forward to it.

  • Zoom to the moon, literally.

This camera is a great SLR alternative, about the size & weight of a good consumer reflex camera, the P900 gives you telephoto capability that would usually require a Lens costing 1000's. Handheld it will take detailed shots of the surface of the moon. Cheaper than an equivalent lens, this bridge camera is Nikon quality and is really worth consideration by amateur bird watchers or outdoor sports enthusiasts. Mine shares pride of place with a much loved Nikon SLR.

  • Expecting too much.

Under ideal light conditions the unit produces good results provided it is used with a monopod. The greater the zoom the loss of quality in the image. However if one takes caution and steadies the camera as much as possible it is possible to get those great shots at lengthy distances. trial and error will eliminate many disappointing results. All round the unit is designed to capture long distance shots with ease and for the price one should not expect to obtain the same results as a DSLR with a 600mm plus lens. The p900 was never designed to compare to a professional DSLR. Well done Nikon.
