In what has been a truly remarkable life and career, multi-talented Connie Stevens started out as an actress and singer, before going on to become a successful Broadway star, business tycoon, movie director, public servant and philanthropist. She emerged as an actress in the late '50's, establishing herself as a household name in the US via her role as Cricket Blake in the ABC?TV?series Hawaiian Eye, concurrent with which she launched a briefly successful secondary career as a jazz-tinged pop singer. This compilation is the first comprehensive overview of Connie's early singing career, presenting the A and B-sides of her singles and the standout tracks from her four LPs. Includes her two signature million-sellers, 'Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)' (a duet with Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes) and the Popcorn classic 'Sixteen Reasons'. Also includes her subsequent hits 'Too Young To Go Steady', 'Why'd You Wanna Make Me Cry', 'Mr. Songwriter', 'Hey Good Lookin', and collectors' items like her German language Euro-hit 'La Le Lu', and the unreleased 'Why Can't He Care For Me'. Now in her mid-70s, Connie still occasionally sings at charity and benefit events, or for television specials, although for the past 30 years she has concentrated rather more on running her cosmetics empire, Forever Spring.

      Thoroughly Satisfying

      With the exception of 1965's "Now That You've Gone" (#53), all Stevens' hits are included in Sixteen Reasons: "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" (#4), "Sixteen Reasons" (#3), "Too Young to Go Steady" (#71), "Why You Wanna Make Me Cry" (#52), "Mr. Songwriter" (#43) and "Hey, Good Lookin" (#104). Whether sassy or sweet, pop songs or ballads in English or German, Ms Stevens is on the money. Though not a hit, my fav is "I Couldn't Say No," a sultry number perhaps reminiscent of Ann-Margret. Also I was quite taken with the country songs taken from The Hank Williams Songbook, such as "You're Cheatin' Heart" and "Cold, Cold Heart." All in all, Connie Stevens is a much under-appreciated songstress. Sixteen Reasons is thoroughly satisfying. Text. Brief but interesting booklet. 33 tracks. ...
