De nek vormt de verbinding tussen hoofd en romp. Om voldoende bewegingen van het hoofd mogelijk te maken is een grote mate van beweeglijkheid nodig van de halswervelkolom. Deze grote beweeglijkheid heeft echter ook een keerzijde: de nek is kwetsbaar en letsels ten gevolge van (auto)ongevallen komen veel voor. Vaak ontstaan hierbij naast orthopedische ook neurologische problemen. Dit komt doordat in en rond de cervicale wervelkolom zich talloze neurologische structuren bevinden zoals ruggenmerg, spinale zenuwen en de plexus brachialis. Dit boek behandelt de meest voorkomende vormen van pathologie van de nek en de directe omgeving. Er wordt onder andere aandacht besteed aan enkele oorzaken van de torticollis (scheefhals), hernia, degeneratieve aandoeningen, radiculopathie, myelopathie, atlanto-axiale instabiliteit, facetluxatie en thoracic outletsyndroom. Zoals gebruikelijk in de boekenreeks van Orthopedische Casuistiek wordt ieder onderwerp besproken aan de hand van concrete patientencasuistiek uit de dagelijkse praktijk. Recente wetenschappelijke inzichten komen aan bod in addenda die volgen op de patientencasus. De tekst is rijk geillustreerd met educatieve tekeningen en foto's.
