    Good open-source Desktop HDD

I decided to format the HDD to NTFS. Moved some different types of files (music, video, movies, documents, database spreadsheets etc.). Tested retrieval and use in place. All worked well. Moved the files back to tge PC and tested them. Again, worked well, no perceived damage. Good External Hard drive. Like it.

Stay away from My Book 8TB

Bought one used and had problems with it - Decided to get a new one recently and... had problems with it! Unlike WD's EasyStore drives, these My Book 8TB units seem dodgy - it's tough to get files on them and after you do, your computer suddenly doesn't recognize the drive. I like WD as a company and have several of their Elements, My Book and EasyStore drives but one thing I am sure of: the My Book series is no good once you go over the 6TB size.

  • WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive

With up to 8TB of capacity, you'll have all the room to keep your favorite photos, videos, music and important files. WD Backup works quietly in the background to help protect your data with minimal resources from your PC. Set your own schedule to back up updated files or new folders automatically. You can even save your files to the cloud with Dropbox™.*

  • Seems to speed up transfers from previously slow drives.

It's interesting that the speed varies. I've tried to narrow down what leads to higher speeds, and so far it seems to be the temperature of the laptop (I use the HDD with a laptop). It's not portable but I needed some extra space at a reasonable price. I'm not sure how this happened, but twice I saw an incredibly quick data transfer between HDDs, something I'd never seen before - about 1.5 GB/s, but most of the time it ranges between 80 MB/s and 200 MB/s which is better than what I had been getting.

  • Very Good 8TB Hard Drive (7.27 TB)

I received the Hard Drive and assessed it Physically (it looked good). I plugged it into my small PC. It was instantly recognized by the PC. I temporarily moved all the software from the Hard Drive to the PC and Formatted it to NTFS and then reenter the software back to the WD Hard Drive. I made folders on the Hard Drive and loaded each with different types of data. Videos, Music, spread sheets, Documents, Databases, etc I tried to open each in turn. All Worked flawlessly. I then downloaded the files back to the PC and ran comparisons with the originals. They were all True. Conclusion ... hard drive works well

  • Reliable performance

I have used WD external hard drives in quite a few locations. They have always performed very well and this device is no exception. I would always recommend the WD brand producs.

  • Very Impressive>

Very impressed with the set up, as it was just "plug n' play". The drive is quiet and transferring data from both a Windows PC and another older external drive was quick and easy.

  • Working great so far as an external hard...

Working great so far as an external hard drive for a mac mini that we are running OBS on to record worship services at church. We were running out of space and have set our setting to save to this external hard drive instead of to the hard drive.

  • Drives a hottie !

Obvious pro's are the dollar per terabyte value, but I'm concerned about the high temperatures these drives produce. Apparently, WD puts helium filled drives in some units, and regular air filled drives in others. It seems that the air filled run significantly hotter (WD80 EDAZ). I added a 40mm USB powered fan to the bottom of the case and let the drive sit on it's side (just like it would in most vertical mount NAS), and blow air through it. Brings the temp down to about 111f from 142f. I'm hoping that this cooler environment will prolong the life of the unit. Interestingly, I have a 6TB MyBook that runs at 110f under load, with an air filled drive inside (WD60 EDAZ). I'm making sure to back up the 8TB drive often.

  • Serves its purpose

I got this as a storage device for my media. I didn't realize that it had WD encryption software, so I'm praying that it holds up. I do have another WD My Cloud Mirror that I have media on also. When trying to organize my media on this drive, I have to wait for it to respond to my clicks within same folder. Otherwise I have no complaints.
