Very nice audiophile-quality amp designed by John Curl in the late 1990's. Good quality components throughout. One thing to be aware on the used market is that there is a simple toggle switch on the back that switches in between stereo mode and mono-block mode. During transport and handling, this switch can easily break and the result is the left channel will appear to be dead. It is a standard 3-pole toggle PCB mount toggle switch that can be replaced if you are inclined to do a bit of soldering.

It took me years before I tried Parasound products. I have used Carver TFM 35x's, Sony ES and Rotel amplifiers with my Lexicon MC-4 and MC-8. I eventually purchased a Zamp v3 just to get an idea and fell in love with the Parasound "house" sound. It lead me to purchase an HCA-750 and HCA-1000a, bot exemplary ampifiers, most notably in the imaging department. I use them to run my Magnepan MMG, with modified crossovers, and never had I had them clip, they drive them with aplomb and overall, has a nice stereo imaging both in width and depth. I also have to mention that I use 12-14 gauge power cables that really unlock the potential of these under rated amps. They really put the Carvers to shame, especially in the depth of soundstage and width. The frequency response is alluring, no hot spots to mention. I liked them so much that I ended up replacing the power supply capacitors on both my Parasounds and now, it is a pristine amplifier with Nichicon and Elna capacitors, along with a upgrade bias pots. I have sold all of my other amplifiers, enough said.Read full review

The HCA1000a is a terrific amp for the money. There are lots of good amps on the used market, but I think that if you follow Parasound stuff you will see that it is in demand and has good resale value. If buying gear like the 1000 used there is little risk because it sells very reasonable prices and they great products for the money. If you don't like sell it and you probably will be close to even. I have kept all my Parasound stuff, but moved more expensive gear that I didn't feel performed to its price. Parasound used gear is great value.
