Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Best Selling in Webcams
It's 2016. I bought one used on eBay because I wanted it when sold as new, but it was too expensive. Now it's affordable, and still surprisingly good for a product design back in 2003. And looks really cool; it's a cylinder with the lens at one end. It connects using FireWire (400), not USB, so the ideal buyer at this point is a Mac user with a Mac that still has a real FireWire port. My Mac mini has FireWire (800) which converts to FireWire (400) with a simple adapter. It also works at the end of a FireWire daisy chain, as long as the port is powered. Video is not "HD" but good quality for 640x480. The microphone is supposedly excellent, although I have not fully tested it at this point. It's better than my old (but more recently made) USB webcam. I won't go into tech specs; you can look that up. It works as expected with Apple's pre-installed apps in OS X El Capitan (current release), including FaceTime, PhotoBooth, and QuickTime Player (to make movie recording). It has a unique ON/OFF switch. A "ring" at the lens end of the camera rotates to turn it ON and OFF. In the OFF position, the lens is physically blocked by a closed aperture. So, users worried about hackers secretly accessing their webcam don't need to put "a piece of tape" over the camera to block it. The microphone is also disabled, without the need to turn it OFF with a software setting. Potential buyers should look for a listing that includes ALL the parts. In comes with three clear plastic stands, one for placing it on a flat surface, one for putting it at the top of a thin laptop display, and one for attaching it to a vertical surface. To use these stands, the cylindrical camera must be connected to FireWire using the included (thinner than typical) FireWire cable, and two small pieces that attach the camera's FireWire port to the stand. You can technically use a standard FireWire (400) cable, but most FireWire cables are too thick (and stiff) to work with the stand and two connector pieces.Read full review

The iSight web cam is easy to use. Great for a phone conversation and a quick Facetime chat but if you want a cam with a really good video quality this isn't it. The sound is excellent, phone call sound is crystal clear along with the sound in a video chat. When installing iSight for the first time it is recognized immediately by the Mac computer.

The iSight is the quintessential webcam for users of older Macs. I purchased one, new, in 2006 when I was using a PowerMac G4 and it changed the world for me, as prior to this very few webcams worked with Mac, and even less software was written for those that did. The FireWire 400 interface is great for transferring video at 30 fps without using a USB port or bogging down on an older machine's USB1.1 connection. While the video isn't high definition, and in fact is limited to 640x480 resolution, it does have good qualities like auto-focus and, with the proper software (try iGlasses), you have great control over the image... even moreso than with the built-in iSights on newer Macs. I have a MacBook, now; the iSight still lives on my G4, but I still occasionally use it for my MacBook when I don't want a camera necessarily looking directly at me. The included mount kits make it easy to position it perfectly on just about any machine. My final verdict is that while you're not going to shoot beautiful HD video with this camera, it is entirely capable, and the built-in mic is better than 90% of those you'll find on the market and is nearly worth the purchase by itself. The Apple iSight is a great addition to any Mac that doesn't have an built in Web cam, such as the current Mac Pro or Mac Mini. It has a built in Mic and and 50mm autofocus lens. One of the parts usually not noted on descriptions is that it has a privacy "off" setting, so you can always tell when it's on or off. Internal shades cover the lens. The video quality is not as good as the current webcams built-in with the mac laptops, but it is very close. The audio is decent. And because it's made by Apple, it works seamlessly with all your apps that can use a camera. I decided to buy this because I converted my MacBook Pro into my desktop machine by adding an external cinema display, and I missed have the web cam for Skype and iChat. It works great now, it's almost like a docking station now. I would recommend one if you're in this situation and you can get your hands on one. They are becoming rare.Read full review
The iSight External Camera is a great camera with a few features lacking. it provides an average resolution of picture, the mounts are plentiful and innovative, and the integration with a Mac is as simple as you would expect. the downside is the inability to zoom in, an average resolution (I was expecting more, especially from Apple), and the camera's habit to heat up when plugged into the FireWire slot, even when not in use. Overall a great camera with a few areas that would have been nice if Apple could have improved.
