My mom had taped this movie last year when it came on television and I watched it and I fell in love with it! The story line is one of the BEST I have EVER followed along with and the ending, was awesome! I loved it at the end when the little girl told Jimmy Stewart, "everytime a bell rings, an angel gets his wings"....and her father smiled. He knew that Clarence, HIS angel, had finally gotten his wings! I decided to buy it because when it comes on around Christmas every year, my mom said it is so hard to find on T.V. (our listings in the paper are not always right...so, channel surfing sometimes, is how my mom has come across it) I bought it now so I never have to be without it. It really has a GREAT message to the story that everyone could use! Thanks everyone for the great reviews. I love Jimmy Stewart, and there will NEVER be movies like this classic again!Read full review
"No man is a failure who has friends . . . " Frank Capra It's a Wonderful Life is a dark, bittersweet post-war tale of a savings-and-loan manager (George Bailey) played by Jimmy Stewart who struggles against the greedy banker Mr. Potter (played by Lionel Barrymore) and the conflict of Bailey's inborn character of "donig the right thing" at all costs. The movie begins with an apprentice angel (Clarence) being given his final assignment before becoming a full angel. In order to get his wings he has to help George Bailey who in sacrificing his dreams to help his town is faced with a financial and legal crisis, and is contemplating suicide. After being fully briefed on George's life, which is the first part of the movie (George from around age 10 to his late 20's) Clarence interrupts George Bailey's suicide attempt and gives George the opportunity to view how the world would be if George were never born. George see's life as if he had never existed and learns that his hometown of Bedford Falls came under the control of his Mr. Potter (the Greedy Banker.) He also discovers that the people he loves - his wife (played by Donna Reed) is unmarried, his brother dies in a childhood accident (because George was not there to save him), and that life in general is completely changed. In seeing how everyone's life impacts other and how is own life has intertwined with others, George decides that life is truly worth living and returns to reality. George finds upon his return to his life that the entire town had pitched in to save his bank from going under and Clarence is able to "get his wings" and become a true angel. Of course I have reviewd a 3 1/2 hour movie very quickly; in fact so quickly that you cannot truly understand how great this movie really is. There are many intertwiing plots, sub plots and issues bought up in this movie. It's A Wonderful Life is a true classic in every sense of the word. Both funny and entertaining it entwines all of the world virtues we should all possess and should all hope to offer. It is a great movie whether you watch it at Christmas or during the hot days of August. Buy this movie or rent it. You won't be sorry and it will give you room for thought.Read full review
