Same receiver...different model numbers. This is the fourth Yamaha receiver I've had in nine years. I keep upgrading. But every feature on every single one is still working fine. These babies hold up. I don't use even a tenth of the features on this unit...you really need to check out the manual to see what you can do. The programming menus are not self-evident and can be very confusing. And it's a royal pain that the menus can't be viewed using the HDMI output. (You have to use the CV, s-video, or component outputs.) Oh, yeah...the volume display is terrible compared to the other units I have. Very small numeric display. On the other hand, these are minor irritations. The one feature that I use a lot is the PureSound mode. This is simply the sound output mode that bypasses all the digital signal and multi-channel processing. (It even turns off the receiver's front display.) You get just stereo signal output, either at the pre-amp outputs or the speaker outputs. This is useful because I basically am using the receiver as a signal source for my Adcom power amps. Finally, some people find the output of the Yamaha receivers to be a bit on the bright side. I would tend to agree, but I don't think you'll find this objectionable unless you are using some speakers like the Klipsch with horn drivers. These tend to be too bright and harsh anyway. Overall, highly recommended receiver as long as you don't pay MSRP.Read full review
What makes this a “GREAT “ sounding amp, it the YPAO processing. BUT…. if you don’t have…THE…CORRECT…. Remote control…. You will never be able to access the YPAO. YPAO…CAN…NOT … be accessed or controlled “ manually” or in any way without THE..correct remote control.. And Yamaha does not make , supply nor support this remote. Either get assurances that BOTH the Remote control AND the YPAO Mic are PART OF THE DEAL AND WORK…or accept that this is just an OK. run of the mill overpriced receiver.
