Thread cutting tool is badly made. I had to clean the burrs off the cutting edges on both sets I bought but it still didn't cut a very good thread so have purchased a thread cutting tap instead. It was cheap so I guess you get what you pay for.

Used on my lawnmower cylinder head as the spark plug threads worn. Had to drill the hole bigger first as the tap would not screw in, other than that worked OK.

It worked with cylinder head on

I cross threaded a spark hole on my old golf this worked well even though I kept the cylinder head on. It cuts a 16mm threaded hole and a 14mm x 1.25 for the plug. The tap is OK, I had to be careful to get it started though. It lacks the 14mm starter thread you may find on a professional tool. Be careful with swarf if leaving cylinder head on. Put lots of grease on the tap to catch it and make multiple passes. Leave the spark plug out and crank the engine over for a second or two once finished to blow any remaining swarf out.

  • Top critical review

The reamer tap good, but theaded insert seems to have limited life

Reamer worked fine on aluminium cylinder head (lawnmower). However the threaded insert has started deteriorating after plug has been removed and replaced a few times - now difficult to hold plug in the insert threads. Probably OK as a one off replacement, but you may need better quality Helicoil solution as a permanent fixture.

  • Chainsaw cylinder head spark plug hole.

Like most things do your homework, the plug hole needs drilling to the correct size and also you need to make sure your insert is spot on so you may have to machine it to give a better fit, don't forget the collar as it will change the depth of your spark plug so it has to be recessed, when finished clean thoroughly and use spark plug to fit insert with lock tite..

  • An effective repair after a fair amount of effort

I hesitated to buy this as the price is quite low and the were no instructions on line nor could I understand how it could work without a pilot drill, but it was for an otherwise dead lawnmower engine so I gave it a try The tool comes without instructions. I initially tried to use it with the head in place but was unable to apply enough pressure to cut a thread, so I took the head off and clamped it to a workbench. Essentially the tap wears away a cone shaped entry until eventually it starts to cut a thread. It took me around 30 minutes with a lot of pressure to complete, but the thread was apparently very clean and took an insert which I fixed with Loctite easily. The start cutters on the tap showed considerable wear so I’m not sure how great a life it will have but I’d guess it would ...

  • Spark plug re- thread

Very simple to use , just make sure the die is straight in the hole , and then just use like a normal die. Different lengths of inserts are helpful. After retaping the bore I simply screwed the insert into the spark plug and then into the new threaded hole. Simple.
