I really liked this printer, easy to use. I had the same printer before it broke down. Rather than buy another printer and learn how to use it, I just went and bought another one. Especially since I had extra ink for it. I was lucky they had it on Ebay since it's no longer in production.

It works OK with letter size sheets but now I needed ledger sheet size but the paper jams each time and jam has to be cleared via back door. I have tried to do ledger sheets from both top and bottom tray and jams both ways. When the print start it starts printing but it also has some very noisy parts in the unit. I have now tried it with ledger sheets for the second day with no success. I bought this model because I had one before that worked well for many years. Please review and let me know what I need to do now.

This printer puts out beautiful color photos. You would be hard pressed to tell they were not professionally produced. The ink cartridges are easy to change out and easy on the purse too, between $10 and $15 a color. There are four slots in the front and you just open the door and replace when needed. Just too easy. The menu screen is easy to read and you can see your pictures on the built in card reader right on the display, no computer needed. You can crop and resize there too. I have not been able to get it to take the heavier photo paper in the 11x17 size, but it will pick up the lighter paper. The real draw back for me is the scanner. It has way too much contrast and I cant seem to get it to adjust to a realistic reproduction of my art. It ether scans with not enough detail or too harsh. I have tried different settings and they all come out unacceptable. Not as good as the Epson I had before. The FAX however is much better than the Epson. It works well with my answering machine and does a good job of detecting the difference between a FAX call and a phone call. The document feeder works well and has not yet jammed on me. I rated it Good instead of Excellent because of the poor scan quality. On just the printer quality I would rate it Excellent. I would recommend this printer for photo quality printing but not for scanning.Read full review
Until recently, I was an HP Printer fan for many years. Last year, I bought an HP Color Laserjet -only to subsequently find out that HP had put a chip for every color in the printer which only allowed customer to use about 60% of the ink in the cartridge! It then would tell you that you're out of ink and to get a replacement shortly. I found out from a tech guy that all their chips and their electronic eye can be overridden. Before that, I found that many generic cartridges on my other 4 (yes 4 active printers) would cause problems because HP demanded that only HP cartridges be uses. I don't like propriety which is primarily why I never bought a Mac. I would rather pay a resonable price for a printer than be stuck with outrageous ink prices - that's what made me look at the Brother printer! I first looked for ink prices, then decided upon a printer. This printer is very nice but I wish it did duplexing and fax to email. The printout is better than the HP Color Laserjet (remarkable isn't it). This is the first replacement, and as time and money allow, I will replace all HP printers with printers from companies like brother that are not (yet?) out to rip everyone off for ink. I will again, search for the least expensive ink, then, I'll decide again which printer to buy. I actually think that most printers today are very competitive for output - - so it is the cost of ink that is the biggest item to look for.Read full review
I have been using my new Brother MFC-6490CW for several weeks. It was important to me to see what the interactivity was before I wrote a review. Well - I am very pleased with the ease with which I am able to fax, print and copy my documents. What was especially gratifying was the ease with which the scanner operates. I create several types of cards and this was especially important to me. The pictures that the scanner produces are easily opened and saved in my various programs. I can manipulate them easily and use them in each of my programs effectively. I would agree with the reviews that I read before purchasing my multitasking Brother. It has delivered as outlined. I look forward to years of interacivity.
