Per tenere a freno questo piccolo mondo dove le colt e i pugni partono da soli c'è un ufficiale di cavalleria. È stato distaccato dalla sua unità per sostituire momentaneamente lo sceriffo, tolto di mezzo poco prima da una scarica di piombo nella schiena. È il tenente Blueberry. Un altro personaggio che si aggira da quelle parti è un tedesco, Prosit Luckner, che giura di avere scoperto una miniera d'oro situata nei Monti della Superstizione. Luogo sacro per gli Apaches, dove nessuno osa avventurarvisi, nemmeno loro, vista la morte certa. Blueberry non cade nella trappola, ma altri sì, compreso Mac Clure...
