Italian-language film with English subtitles. This is a story about love, compassion, the family you're born into, and the family you choose to call your own. A gay couple in a relationship of 15+ years, enjoying life in a closely-knit community of friends in Rome, helps out a longtime friend of both men who actually introduced them to each other -- a single mom with a complicated personal past -- by looking after her two kids while she's in the hospital for medical tests. Not all goes as planned...The couple's relationship is put to the test in realistic and, in some instances, unexpected ways that expose hidden truths. The script, based on a true story, is excellent, as is the direction, with engaging, persuasive performances by an exceptional cast who all have interesting and expressive faces. The gay couple's native Roman, played by Edoardo Leo, is especially lively and likable, the natural comedian of the two, and a good foil to his northern Italian partner, elegantly played by Stefano Accorsi, who reveals the complexity of his character in ways that truly moved me. Both are easy on the eyes. I have a dislike of cloying, "cute kids" in films, but no worries here: The young actors playing sister and brother contribute significantly to the film's success, astutely guided by the director. The soundtrack is evocative in both traditional and recent contemporary Italian ways (Mina fans, this one's for you). In addition to dramatic moments and joyful scenes, there's a noir-ish dimension to the film that especially towards the end. This is an emotionally generous film that portrays LGBTQ+ individuals colorfully, sometimes a bit stereotypically, but still respectfully, with sexual innuendo throughout but no sex scenes that might turn some viewers off. A film very much worth seeing more than once.Read full review
