Synopsis
Young Rachel Kalama, growing up in idyllic Honolulu in the 1890s, is part of a big, loving Hawaiian family, and dreams of seeing the far-off lands that her father, a merchant seaman, often visits. But at the age of seven, Rachel and her dreams are shattered by the discovery that she has leprosy., This richly imagined novel, set in Hawai'i more than a century ago, is an extraordinary epic of a little-known time and place---and a deeply moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of visiting far-off lands like her father, a merchant seaman. Then one day a rose-colored mark appears on her skin, and those dreams are stolen from her. Taken from her home and family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka'i. Here her life is supposed to end---but instead she discovers it is only just beginning. With a vibrant cast of vividly realized characters, Moloka'i is the true-to-life chronicle of a people who embraced life in the face of death. Such is the warmth, humor, and compassion of this novel that "few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel's story" (mostlyfiction.com).

Molokai is an Excellent Historical Fiction Book

This is an excellent historical fiction book. The author has researched Molokai, Hawaii history and has woven it beautifully into the story. The characters are believable and capturing. Readers of this book will learn very much about the problems that lepers faced during this era in history when they were banished from regular life with their families and forced to live in a leper colony on the island of Molokai. I would highly recommend this historical novel!

  • It's a good book

It's a BOOK! Not a design element. I paid only $5 for it,and the book is old. Totally readable, but I cannot go on and on about a $5 book.

  • Wonderful book!

Hawaii. Leprosy on Molokai. I lived in Hawaii when it was finally decided leprosy was not contagious, and the lepers were allowed to leave and rejoin their hometowns. I think it is by far one of the best books I've ever read. An easy read!
