Kemco's longstanding Top Gear franchise moves away from high-performance sports cars into the realm of two-wheelers for their fourth racing game on the Nintendo 64. After choosing from sixteen officially licensed dirt and street bikes from Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha, one or two players can embark on one of four modes: Single Race, Time Attack, Trick Attack, and Championship.
The game is played from a default perspective of behind the rider as the analog Control Stick is used to steer and to perform stunts. Those longing for a taste of realism can also play from a first-person view set above the handlebars. In addition, Expansion Pak owners can create and save up to three tracks as well as play in a high-resolution mode.
A Single Race has you choosing a bike and track before competing against yourself or versus a friend. Time Attack is structured like the Single Race, only the goal is to reach each checkpoint before time expires. Finish the race and you'll get to compete against a ghost rider matching your fastest time! Trick Attack involves earning points by catching air and then performing a series of tricks as you continue to race along the track.
The Championship mode consists of a season spanning multiple races, allowing users to unlock additional courses and bikes that will become available in the other three game modes. In addition, Top Gear Hyper-Bike has an assortment of selectable options, including adjustments for screen brightness, video display, sound and music levels, and shadowing effects.
In order to save game data, a Controller Pak accessory is required with 123 empty pages of information (out of 123). Players can also snap in a Rumble Pak to feel vibration feedback while they race, and the Expansion Pak enables users to choose the resolution and whether or not to play in a letterbox format.
