Get a good one and it's a brilliant professional lens to fall in love with
This professional classic is one of my favourite lenses, capable of exceptional results. It is heavy and solid, looks great, feels great and is reliable. The picture sharpness I get is quite stunning. It's an old shaft drive auto focus, still with good speed and accuracy, however it will need some offset put into the autofocus adjustment menu. The push-pull zoom function is easy and smooth, and it's a joy to manually focus. Think carefully about the zoom range, particularly if you are using DX. For me I treat it as a normal lens that extends forward on my 7000, and that's why I like it. It's only a 2x zoom ratio, but that has always equated to excellent quality. A great lens, but there's a couple of caveats with this classic that need to be said if you want one. First thing is that, while ... This professional classic is one of my favourite lenses, capable of exceptional results. It is heavy and solid, looks great, feels great and is reliable. First thing is that, while it is very sharp, it's contrast can be a bit flat in certain light conditions, although it's totally recoverable with 'levels' in Photoshop. The performance wide open is acceptable at 35mm but marginal at 70mm. A couple of stops down however and it just sings! The second issue is mechanical. A good one feels brilliant. But internally it's a complex machine, and as such it is susceptible to wear, particularly in the guide rollers, the common thing being some back and forward play in the zoom function which will throw focus out if you move it after setting focus. The final thing may be a bit scary, but I need to mention it. I have three of these beauties, (can you tell I love 'em?) and the reality is that all three are different, supporting reviews elsewhere that sample variation is genuine. They are all great, but one in particular has a clear edge over the other two. If you've not got another one to compare with would you notice? I doubt it; my 'worst' one is still a great lens that I am happy to use. Just for reference the earlier non 'D' version is optically identical to the newer one.

Professional lens at budget price - solid, robust and sharp.
I was looking for a sharp, fast lens with Nikon mount but did not want to pay for a new one with stabilisation. These older professional lenses looked like a good option as they are usually less than half the price of the 'equivalent' new versions and have lower minimum f-stops so you can shoot at higher shutter speeds, reducing the need for stabilisation. Image quality is excellent - glass technology has been around for a long long time - and build quality is very robust unlike newer lenses. Make sure that the copy you bid on is clean and has clear glass but it's hard to go wrong with one of these at the price you can get them.I was looking for a sharp, fast lens with Nikon mount but did not want to pay for a new one with stabilisation.
