  • Way More than Just Words Tolkien Invented...

    The first third of the book is about what lexicographers do, and the history of the Oxford English Dictionary, which is an amazing feat of word-ology all on its own. Then the next third is about Tolkien's approach to writing, both from his time on the OED and his teaching work, and his novels. The third part is analysis of words he used in the Lord of the Rings and its prequels. Not all words are covered in brief definitions, instead, there is an essay on a selection of interesting words, including bane, staggerment, dingle and dern. Each of the sections has a frontispiece in one of the Rune alphabets he used, and no translation is given, so you are on your own, because I'm not telling what they say. The book reads like a research study, not a popular history of salt, so be prepared ...
