About this product

Product Information

A classic Australian war novel, inspired by the author's experiences as an airgunner in the Second World War. This new, revised and annotated edition includes chapters never before published, a fascinating biography of John Bede Cusack by his daughter, Kerry McCouat, and an informative introduction by editor Robert Brokenmouth. 'A shocking, authentic little masterpiece of men at war.' - Australian Book Review 'One of three outstanding books about the air war that have been written by Australians.' - Ross Campbell, Daily Telegraph 'In language and content this book of an Australian airgunner's war is strong meat. But it bears on every page the stamp of authenticity and can be thoroughly recommended for the graphic, unblinkered insights it gives into the author's three years' experience in RAF bombers ... this vivid, often brutal book ... is vastly entertaining, with many humorous passages - and some sultry ones, too, on the amatory side of life in wartime England.' - Leslie Jillett, Sydney Morning Herald 'The author is a natural writer with a flair for belly-jolting realism ... He is a real image Aussie, tough, ribald, amused by discipline, a colossal womaniser and a mighty man for the grog and all this comes over hot and salty ... It brings the almost ignored sacrifice of the airgunners before the reading public with a savage poignancy.' - Derek Whitelock '... it proves vividly what I think it sets out to prove - that war is degradation. That this is achieved not from the viewpoint of a pacifist but from the viewpoint of a man who despised the philosophy of his enemy, adds to its stature.' - Ivan Southall

Always happy with the Nile's service. Whilst dispatch can take longer than others, books are sourced at a great price from locations worldwide and from prior experience I know to order in advance. I ordered three expensive textbooks for uni, two weeks later they were dispatched and the next day received - all earlier than expected timeframe. Packaged very well, books intact. Great seller, updated tracking and items as described. A+++

  • A very easy to read book.

John Bede writes a very good and compelling story however the passing of time does fade the memory and there are a few small errors in the timeline and who was who but one one must understand at the same time that many of the characters were still alive at the time of original writing. In all a very enjoyable & entertaining read. I also wish that some areas of the book had been elaborated on more such as armaments and technical details. It does not contain the gore and sadness that some other military non-fiction books contain; re: Sailors To The End.

  • One of the great classics re WWII

Absolutely wonderful. A classic work regarding Australians at war in Bomber Command. Half of those who volunteered for Bomber Command did not return home. 55 573 young men died serving their country. Their average age was 22 years old. These men have been long over-looked and deserve recognition for their efforts. War is hideous and not to be glorified but it must be recorded. Well done. A fabulous record of a terrible time beyond our imagination. RIP/RIF to you all.
