Should you buy this - maybe; maybe not
The Classic Albums disc on Who's Next is the second in that series that I own. The other one's subject is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. And that's where the rub is for me. The Pink Floyd feature is quite good. A look at everything on the album along with interviews/comments from each of the members plus Alan Parsons, Chirs Thomas, David Fricke and others make for an interesting view. The bonus materials are quite good also, adding to the overall value of the disc. Unfortunately the Who disc is not quite the same quality. On this disc there is no comparable bonus material - in fact no bonus material at all - just the main program. There is not a detailed look at EVERY tune on the album - they leave out Song is Over, Love Ain't for Keeping, and Getting in Tune. In fact, that is ... The Classic Albums disc on Who's Next is the second in that series that I own. The other one's subject is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. And that's where the rub is for me. In fact, that is really my main disappointment compared to the Floyd disc. They do talk with Roger, Pete and John - Keith being dead when this was put together - along with Glyn Johns, Bobby Pridden (briefly), Chris Stamp - former manager, the Who's press agent and Dave Marsh - rock journalist. The focus, to me, seemed more on discussing the Lifehouse project of which the songs on Who's Next were a part. For those unaware of this angle, they are given a good overview on Lifehouse and it's problems and why it was aborted at the time. Another annoying thing, for me, was some of the live performance clips which were cut short right as I was becoming involved with them. Admittedly, these are not supposed to be the focus of the program so abbreviated clips are to be expected. There were clips from Monterey Pop, The Kids Are Alright, and some other performances I had not seen and some I had. There are jarring cuts from the studio - where Glyn is showing some things about Baba O'Reilly - to the Kilburn footage. Jarring? For me, yes, as the pitch difference sounded disconcerting. That really is a minor thing for most I would suspect. You also get a brief look at how Pete did the synth stuff for the album which was a nice. Yeah, I know, all I'm doing is complaining. So here's my bottom line: If you are casually interested in the Who and this album BUY it. I'm sure you will find it entertaining if the Who's music appeals. You'll find out some stuff you never knew and gain a better understanding of where the tunes came from and why. The visuals are quite good and well done and the sound quality matches. If you're a Who fan and this is the first of the Classic Album series you've ever seen; BUY it! You'll enjoy hearing from Roger, John and Pete about the whole Lifehouse thing and you'll enjoy the music. There's even a tv appearance of Who doing Join Together which you may have not seen. On the other hand, if you've seen others in the series it's a maybe/maybe not on purchasing. If the stuff I mentioned wouldn't bother you - BUY it. If they would, you may want to pass unless you're a fan and want to add another nice item to your collection. Like I said, it is well done visually and sonically. Excusing the minor quibbles on my part, it's a disc definitely worth viewing. Buying might be another story. You'll have to decide that one.
