About this product
Product Information
Power in the German Democratic Republic was concentrated in the Politburo and central committee of the ruling communist party. Conflict was taboo and party discipline was of a fundamental article of faith. This book penetrates the public image of a monolithic regime and explores the opposition to the leadership at key turning points in the country's history between 1946 and 1973. A study of hawks and doves, of reformers and hard-liners, it poses the question of whether East Germany could have pursued a different path to the one it took. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the history and politics of East Germany have been transformed as interesting areas of research. Based on primary source material from archives in Berlin and on interviews with former communist party functionaries, this work is aimed at students of German history and politics and both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
