About this product

Product Information

In 1939, Gustav Kleinmann, a Jewish upholsterer in Vienna, was seized by the Nazis. Along with his teenage son, Fritz, he was sent to Buchenwald in Germany. There began an unimaginable ordeal that saw the pair beaten, starved and forced to build the very concentration camp they were held in. When Gustav was set to be transferred to Auschwitz, a certain death sentence, Fritz refused to leave his side. Throughout the horrors they witnessed and the suffering they endured, there was one constant that kept them alive- the love between father and son. Based on Gustav's secret diary and meticulous archive research, this book tells his and Fritz's story for the first time - a story of courage and survival unparalleled in the history of the Holocaust.

A wonderful story of family love.

This book shows the plight of the Jews from the start of Germany’s march through Europe. It shows the terrible humiliation and brutality that was inflicted on them, not only by German’s but their own non Jewish friends. This book shows how they were beaten to death or ordered to run passed a guard knowing they’d be shot dead! How human beings could treat each other in this way, is beyond my comprehension but having visited Auschwitz I know this happened. A well written personal account of a very sad event in our history!

  • Amazing Read

Saw this advertised and read reviews. Having visited Poland and been to Auchwitz myself and read many books books, I think book gives a very personal feel on what really happened thou people dent it. How can they when there are amazing stories/films/documentaries and personal journal's to read and teach our children the world over the atrocities that happened. History of inhuman treatment if human beings, we must never to forget every one of them that died, those who survived, those who liberated them and their families that bear their names and carry their stories forward.
