Where to start? I'll skip the history lesson except to say that the Giant Beat series is the father to the 2002 B8 bronze series. The ones that are currently sold are crash-rides. I don't have any experience with the original series so I can't confirm the stories of dedicated ride and crash models that are sometimes claimed to have been made. I really really like my giant beats!! I have a set of all sizes except the hats. I suspect they are great also, but I can't justify buying more hats when I allready own Paiste signature sound edge and my mixed set of 2002 med top with 2002 sound edge bottom hats. Along with my Zildjian New Beat hats this is as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned. Now, just a quick overview of my Giant Beats. Brilliant, sizzling full, warm sound with plenty ... Brilliant, sizzling full, warm sound with plenty of volume if needed. Not the most articulate expressive or sweet cymbal sound you can buy. That's not what they are for. Thin enough to play fairly soft but enough meat on them to growl if wanted. The 24 inch is the star of the series. It is just a big powerful ride with crashability that a lot of Paiste cymbals can't even DREAM of. Many other brands as well. I don't even try to crash on my 20 inch 2002 rides. Also, I mainly use my 18 inch Giant Beat as a crash in my setup. Just know that it can be used as a small ride when played that way. There is also a nostalgic "throwback" aspect to the sound of these babies if you are looking for that. They are not just about that and I don't want to tag them as retro. Get out your old vinyl and you will be suprised how many drummers cherished this series power and ability to cut into the mix. Between the formula 602 series and the more mid heavy, powerful Giant Beat series, Paiste earned a rightful place in the recorded history of Rock. Check them out!!!

Most "well-rounded"/multi-purpose cymbal I've ever owned.
Paiste rhymes with feisty for good reason. The crisp attack and decay of their handmade cymbals is unparalleled, in my opinion, so of course this review is somewhat bias:-) That being said, I highly recommend this product line to anyone that really likes their Signatures series [but wants that vintage feel to the sound], the diversity of applications, and their awesome size options. Also, these are not specifically crashes or rides, but an even multipurpose balance of both. Ranging from 18"-24", they represent the dimensions of John Bonham's kit, along with many other original hard rockers of that era. They're great for jazz, R&B, hip hop, swing, rockabilly, trip hop, singer/ songwriter, classic rock, americana, or any other genre that requires a drummer's special atmospheric touch. I've ...
