Great radio for fire departments
Our department just got 4 new APX 4000 on our new apparatus and they work really well. Long lasting battery, bright great looking display, clear audio, and loads of features that we don't really use but are cool none the less. Our department is planning on picking more of these up to put on all the trucks. Sadly we don't get them issued to us, so if we want one for ourselves we are stuck buying one out of our own pockets. I work part time on the ambulance and when Im around town I like to at least have one in my truck just in case I roll up on an emergency or Im the first person to the emergency. I work for 2 departments and both do not supply us with issued radios. My other department only the full time personal get issued radios part timers do not. This Department uses APX 7000 XE. Yes ... Yes they are great radios but are VERY EXPENSIVE! They are also lager in size with more features that we would never use currently maybe in the way future, but now we don't even use the P25 features. The only thing I liked was the lager volume knob, channel knob, and man down button.... thats it. Anyways I was not going to pay an extra $2000 for a lager less compact radio that does the same thing a APX 4000 offers. If your department DOES NOT USE. P25 features or dose not like large radios or dose not need dual band.... then save the money and go for an APX 4000. I went without the P25 feature for now as it over priced for what it is.... should of been included by Motorola and not an add on (typically Motorola looking for ways to make more money) save your moneys and skip out on the feature unless you absolutely need it! It will save you $650 on the radio. Another small down side of the entire APX series is the price of accessories. $12 for a belt clip come on Motorola really?!? This is probably the most disappointing problem with this series of radios is that Motorola tries so hard to make extra money off of you or your department, even software updates coast extra. I hope in the future they can adjust on pricing as it would make it so much easier for department to purchase these radios. In conclusion, if you are looking for a great midrange radio with a lot of features and tough in all conditions then look no further then a APX 4000 Update 2019: This radio is still solid dose everything I need it to recently programmed voice announcements for Zone and Channel announcement. Also programmed in a dynamic Zone as well which is very helpful. Works well with all APX mics including XE RSM mics! (Motorola website says the XE RXM500s not supposed by the APX4000 but they are.) Still recommend this radio to this day.
