I have absolutely loved and treasured each book in the Earth's Children series and this one is no exception. Although this one was not quite as drama filled as others, it did bring about closure to previously built-up storyline. It also ended well leading up to the final book in the series. The book is very informative and historically accuarate; containing lots of information on local plant and animal life as well as various techniques to survival of mankind during the ice age. All of this series has had these intriguing informational assets and this book is no exception. It is very obvious that Jean M. Auel does so much research and is meticulous about being historically accurate in her books, even though they are considered fiction. I am continually amazed at her in-depth explanations of how people used each part of hunted animals for survival, as well as the hunting techniques themselves. I am sold on her talent for writing and would be interested in purchasing any of her books. I like her descriptions of pleasure scenes- not too detailed but enough to keep reader involved. I don't really need as many descriptions as she puts in them, but am by no means complaining. She is a wonderful auther and even though this book did not keep me as riveted as some of the others, such as the 2nd and 3rd in the series, it is still a great story with much anticipated events in it. Love the involvement of Wolf and the horses especially! These are definitely some of the few books I will actually read twice! Thanks, Jean- keep writing! I would love it if you kept this story going or even wrote sequels involving the next generation of Ayla and Jondalar!!Read full review
I have read the Earth Children Series since the beginning. I have watched Ayla grow up and thru the years she has become a woman. Brave at heart like some women like to think of themselves... in reading I have visited and been in the heart of Ayla many times over... I like the author bringing a woman into the forefront of heroism, strength, intelligence and the ability to endure what life brings to her. A book one should read. Marsha Mae A
I purchased this book due to having read the whole series of books while in high school. I have re-read them numerous times and was certain the library was tired of seeing me return to check out the same books, so I decided on a purcahse to add them to my own personal library. The books are full of vivid details from the landscape, vegetation and day to day lives of the main character. It's chock full of emotional upsets and victories. You can't help but to be drawn in to the characters life and feel a deep connection with her as you grow with her throughout the series of books. ...And I'm still awaiting breathlessly for the last of the series! :)
I have read all of the books in the series by Jean Auel over the years and wanted to have them in the hardback versions as well as in the paperback version to keep both in my house and in my motor home; the hardback version has an easier to read print, a bit larger and the book is more durable, I can donate the copies to my local library when I am not in need of them or store them to be read again. The books are a romantic fantasy about prehistoric times and thus are of a mysterious era in human history. I love to read and to compose music as these are whole brain activities which enrich me very much.
Great book to read about how we live way back then, and all the travels of Ayla and Jondalar (can't spell name right i think) and the Journeys they made to get to his home of the 9 cave of the Zendonii (didn't spell right) and the people they met on their journey to his home and the food and animals they met plus Jonde" learned alot about the clan (flatheads) and the way he reacted to them as people and Ayla learned alot about her kind of people both the good and the bad. Great book to read and fun as well to read again and again from the first book Clan of the cave bear to the last one the Painted caves. So pick up a copy today and enjoy a good book.
