Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” is one of the most influential horror films ever made. Not only did it invent the modern blockbuster, but it also spawned a handful of imitators such as the film I’ll be reviewing today. Joe Dante’s breakthrough chiller “Piranha” is darn good one with its sophisticated film references and Phil Tippett’s handmade gore effects. A perky investigator (Heather Menzies) journeys to Lost River Lake in order to locate a missing teenage couple. So she teams with a drunken townie (Bradford Dillman) to lead her, and they discover an abandoned army base inhabited by a reclusive doctor (Kevin McCarthy) who has been running a top secret project that can raise mutant piranhas for the tenacity of increasing biological warfare. As the killer fish are accidently released into the lake, hilarity and ferocity ensues. I will say “Piranha” is not your usual Roger Corman production. Sure it’s a low-budget B-Movie but there’s much more than that. With a nonsensical and crafty script co-written by future director John Sayles, Dante pulls no punches when it comes to combining good-natured thrills with black humor. Something that can be traced in his future films such as “The Howling” and “Gremlins.” The cast alone is an exploitation film lover’s dream. Although the delectable Menzies and the serviceable Dillman are alright as the leads, McCarthy and Corman regular Dick Miller steal the movie pleasingly as the doctor and a money-grubbing resort owner. Director Paul Bartel is also a laugh riot as a smug camp counselor who has some attitude. And it’s great to see Barbara Steele in this film as well. “Piranha” does for lakes and rivers what “Jaws” did for oceans and beaches. Forget the creatively-bankrupt 3-D remake and spend some quality time with this one.Read full review
Another very good Corman movie. Quirky and campy at times, as we like them.

I remember this movie from my youth. Yes it's Corny and yes it's campy. That is what makes it great. Plus I remembered from my youth one full frontal shot and quite a few natural boobs. lol. In my youth those were important. Great blast from the past.

The movie piranha is a awesome and excellent movie and I can't wait for this movie to come in the mail. I have seen this movie on tv and it is a amazing and delightful movie. I gave this movie 5 stars cause it is entertaining and I enjoy watching such a movie with blood and guts in it. Watching piranha is one of the best movies ever and watching people getting eaten alive is so thrilling and fascinating and exciting. I really love the movie piranha and this movie is the greatest movie since the movie jaws.
