About this product

Product Information

Vintage guide offered turn-of-the-century seamstresses clear instructions for altering patterns and creating shirt-blouses, skirts, wedding gowns, coats, maternity wear, children's clothing, and other apparel. At the turn of the century, ladies of privilege could easily afford their own dressmakers, and even middle-class housewives occasionally employed competent seamstresses. But many women did their own sewing, often relying on Dressmaking, Up to Date, a how-to book published by the Butterick Publishing Company. First published in 1905 and widely considered the first modern American sewing book, this extremely rare volume is published here complete and unabridged. This Butterick manual provides clear and concise instructions for altering patterns, hand-sewing stitches, and creating shirt-blouses, skirts, wedding and evening gowns, coats, jackets, maternity wear, undergarments, bathrobes, children's clothing, and many other articles of apparel. Today's costume historians and sewing enthusiasts will find fascinating instruction in such long-lost arts as boning a bodice perfectly, creating skirt sweepers and bust enhancers, concealing hooks and eyes, and other vintage dressmaking techniques. An indispensable archive of information on late-Victorian and turn-of-the-century clothing, this volume will be of immense interest to anyone fascinated by the fashion and costume of the period. It will also be of value to needleworkers wanting to create accurate reproductions of Victorian-era costume, or to anyone interested in applying time-honored sewing techniques to a modern wardrobe.

Always happy with the Nile's service. Whilst dispatch can take longer than others, books are sourced at a great price from locations worldwide and from prior experience I know to order in advance. I ordered three expensive textbooks for uni, two weeks later they were dispatched and the next day received - all earlier than expected timeframe. Packaged very well, books intact. Great seller, updated tracking and items as described. A+++

  • Just a copy of another book

While I like the content of the book, I wish it was more than a direct copy of an extant Butterick journal of the era. It's a duplicate of something I already own - I would have appreciated some work put into this by the author like updating the directions and photos to a more modern and readable format. I'm also disappointed in the size of the book and graphics. This is a smaller, 6 X 8 size (I should have read deeper into the description) which makes the graphics harder to distinguish. The quality of the paper is thinner than average books, making the print show through on the reverse side on many pages. All in all, disappointed in the quality of the book. For content, if you don't already have access to an old Butterick Book - this is what you may need to get through a reproduction ...

  • Should say 'New', otherwise it's a Perfect title

The title caught my attention right off the bat. I am a collector of antique sewing items and I also do a lot of "period" authentic sewing. I like that this book, not only does it give the references, but it has the actual original photographs of the day. It's very easy to understand and to follow IF you have basic sewing knowledge. Although it gives the 'basics', these were the basics given to women at the beginning of the century - and during that period it was assumed that women were being somewhat taught at home. This newer book is a great guide if someone wants to accurately replicate turn of the century sewing. I highly recommend it!

  • Excellent Resource for 19th c. Clothing Detail

This book is incredibly rich with information about 19th century women’s clothing design. We are using it as a resource at our historical society. It is also a fascinating and valuable description of sewing techniques from the 1800s.

  • Great for everyone including beginners

Pictures are pretty clear as well as the instructions. The guide is helpful for touching up clothing that needs repairing or creating a new piece.
