I purchased the Boss DS-2 pedal because it has the ability to switch between two types of distortion, you can do this manually or plug in an optional foot switch to change on the fly! There is a noticeable difference between the two types of distortion and after a little knob turning I find a setting that allowed me to go from a chunky rhythm distortion to a soaring lead distortion! While this is certainly not the greatest ever distortion pedal, for the budget minded you can't go wrong with this one!The three knobs make it easy, level, tone and distortion. I found the distorted sounds I was looking for and would recommend to others! I would buy another one if this got lost or stolen and for the price you can't go wrong!
Killer distortion. It is my favorite distortion pedal out of several I've tried. The tone knob in particular does a great job of darkening or brightening your tone in a useful way. Some tone knobs only have one sweet spot... not this one. There is also plenty of gain on tap, and furthermore, turning the gain down gives a really sweet overdrive tone. My only complaint is that, in my opinion, the mode II is pretty lame. It boosts the mids and cuts the highs a little too much, resulting in a tone closer to a fixed wah than, say, a mid-boosted tube screamer. Also, the overall volume jumps rather noticeably when switching from mode I to II. However, given the price, build quality, and sound of mode I, the pedal easily deserves 5 stars.

This distortion pedal is very versatile. I have owned mine for several years now and I love it. Mode 1 is your basic DS-1 distortion except on this pedal I must admit there is a warmer tone more like the older Japanese model DS-1's. Mode 2 has more grit in the distortion. Between the two modes available you can easily find your sweet spot with this pedal. Turn the gain down for more of an overdrive/boost or turn it up to key in that tube-like distortion. With a good amp this pedal can do wonders.
Awesome sound from the pedal, the main thing you want to watch out for when using it is the natural hum of the pedal. As soon as you finish playing it, turn it off to disable the noise.
