Immediately upon picking this game up, you'll feel something special. Something that makes this more than your average action-adventure game. Perhaps it's the franchise's illustrious history, spanning back to the NES console release of 1988. Perhaps it's the feeling of really being a ninja, thanks to the brilliantly responsive controls and flashy character animations. Whatever it is, there is greatness present right from the start. The first thing the first-time player will notice is how much deeper and faster the combat system is compared to the genre's norm. You won't find any one-button combat or sluggish response here. Truly one of the most intuitive and hardest to master combat systems the genre has ever seen, it rivals that of true fighting games. New players may be frustrated by the difficulty, as the game is harder than the average 21st century release. Hearkening back to the days of old, Ninja Gaiden will make you start back at save points that aren't right next to where you died...and it will do it frequently, thanks to the wide variety of intelligent enemies. Once you begin to grasp the mechanics and learn how to counter the enemies' tricky tactics, however, a whole new world of tactical combat will open up to you. If I had one complaint about the title, (and believe me, it's not an easy thing to find one.) it would be the somewhat clunky camera system. The camera sometimes fails to give you the best angle on the action, but this can usually be gotten around with the manual camera controls. Also, the graphics look a little bit dated by today's standards (there's no anti-aliasing to speak of), but that's to be expected from a game of this age. Regardless of these minor flaws, this game stands as one of the Xbox's greatest triumphs, and will be one of those titles that remains in everyone's collection for a loooong time.Read full review
"Easy on the eyes, hard to put down." This game is everything a platform hack and slash wants to be and then some. The story, while not the most griping seen in video games, seems to actually make a decent excuse for having Ninjas in video games (not that there is any reason for that ofcourse). The story revolves around three different organizations, two swords, and a really pissed off Ninja. What more could you ask for? Lets take it down the list now shall we? Graphics: 10/10 Once you see a screen shot of this game, you'll be in complete awe. The game looks that nice on screen, if not better since the whole thing chugs along at a very steady frame rate. Everything from the Ninpo to various weapons on enemies looks amazing. Even the animations look damn good. Easily the best looking game out for a system right now. Controls: 10/10 Damn, Team Ninja hits every right button on this game. It controls like a dream (even on my half busted Controller S it works nicely!). Every button is placed right where you would want it, making it a breeze to do various advanced Ninja techniques. You can chain hits off of enemies to build up your combos for more essence (either heals you/your ninpo gauges or is used as currency at the shops). The only hang up seems to be the camera. Its sometimes difficult to get the camera right where you want it, but its pretty damn difficult to do that in any game. Now, its not horrible though. Infact, this has the best camera of most games of this type. It's just not as perfected as the rest of the game that makes this stick out. Now, time to delve into what makes this such a great game (other then the stated reasons, and the fact it has ninjas). This game is a pure ride of fun, assuming you can hang with the difficulty (more on this later). As you string attacks together for impressive looking combos and slaying any ninja or commando in your path, you will be able to do this with whatever weapon you like (once purchased). Nunchuks to giant hammers, this game has the goods. Just don't get to carried away with the offense so you forget the defense. Another great feature! This game seeks balance in combat. You will not always be on the offensive, and if you are you will get quickly cut down. While on the defensive though you have plenty of counters and dodges that make it seem as though you never switched from offense to defense. This kind of combat happens 75% of the time, and there are the few break ups in action for a puzzle or platform. This game gets REALLY hard though, so if you can't take what you give, you may not have that great a time with this one (Unless your a Greater Ninja like myself, then you won't ever taste the bitterness of defeat ^^). Overall: 10/10 Whats not to like about this game? Anything in this game that isn't polished to a shine is still above average. If you enjoyed any old platform/action titles in your life, go out and buy this as soon as possible. You will never forgive yourself if you don't.Read full review
Simply one of the greatest action based games on Xbox (Ninja Gaiden II 360 is a pathetic throw-together copy). The fight engine is quick, accurate & simple. Graphics are Halo'ish glossy & detailed, as in the ancients ruins of the underground, which is breathtaking along w/the dark soundtrack that gives you an unforgettable experience. Ninja Gaiden Black is a must have, as well, but the special feature of this version is after you beat the game you can replay the game on harder difficulties plus have all the weapons in the game from the beginning. Aside from that, upon entering a code after beating the game, you can start the game off w/a "Ninja Lightsaber" & an alternate outfit, making the replay value of this game phenomenal...if you desire to be a virtual Bruce-Jet-Jackie Chan-Lee of a ninja. m/..Read full review

9.0 Presentation A brilliant package, Ninja Gaiden was made to suit a variety of gamers (just not overprotective mothers). Varied weapons, smart mechanics, and online tourneys. 10 Graphics You've got eyes don't you? Running at a solid 60 fps, it's fast-paced, filled with interesting enemies and a variety of locales, is beautifully designed and has loads of heads flying off. 8.0 Sound The weapons each sound unique and enemies have nice squeals, but the English dub is pretty weak. The range of the score is impressive, but a greater variety in sound effects would have helped. 9.0 Gameplay Granted there are some camera problems and some annoying things that happen near the end of the game, but overall this is a masterpiece for an action game. It's Prince of Persia with a sack. 10 Lasting Appeal Not only is it 20 hours long, but there's new challenges in the online tourneys and plenty of reasons to play through again. This alone will get you through the dog days of summer.Read full review
Hype is tough to live up to and it seems whenever Team Ninja and Tomonobu Itagaki create a game for Xbox, the expectations go off the charts. With Ninja Gaiden, Itagaki pledged to create a game with incredible graphics, lightning-fast gameplay, an ocean of blood, and an experience to remember. Throughout the long development process, numerous things could have gone wrong to foil those lofty promises. With the wrong type of enemy AI, combat could have become a derivative experience. Had Team Ninja gone for cookie-cutter level design, a long game could have felt a whole lot longer. If the controls weren't perfect, the Prince of Persia-like platforming would have been a nightmare. However, none of these horrible things happened. If you've been tootin' the horn of the hype train, keep on chuggin', because Ninja Gaiden is one of the best action games around, filled with innovative design, a deep combat system, tons of secrets and oh yes, enough blood to satisfy Carrie on Prom Night. I LIKE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Read full review
If you ever dreamed of becomming a Ninja (or not) you will have a lot of fun playing this game. Very challenging and plays a lot like a fighting game with a great story mode to follow along. You can pull of some very fun moves and the graphics and sound are top notch. If you have not played this game get it or get Ninja Gaiden Black which has even more of the same stuff.
By far one of the best games i have played on the xbox. The graphics make use of xbox's hard drive and the game play is awesome. The fighting combinations are great and the scenery has been designed well. The story plot is interesting and real easy to comprehend.
Not my cup of tea, but for someone looking for an incredibly challenging hack and slash with extremely tight controls it does the job perfectly.
