Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Best Selling in Portable AM/FM Radios
This is a terrific radio to listen to in the dark - in other words, in bed without bothering one's partner/spouse. All the functions can be controlled by touch with no need for light, unlike some digital pocket radios where I find myself hunting around for buttons. Here, there's just the on/off switch on the front, the tuning dial on one side, the volume dial on the other, and two small switches to select AM or FM and for "local" or "DX" (distance) listening. I've tuned into AM stations hundreds of miles away, and on FM, the sound is better than some of my other, more expensive radios. You can get a used version of the SRF-39 for a song. That said, I paid premium for a new, transparent version - the kind sold in Federal Prison commissaries for many years - as I feel it adds to the character and history of this radio. I'm happy I did.Read full review

This little gem has both outstanding sensitivity and selectivity while providing excellent sound quality for it's size. The Sony SRF-39FP will most likely exceed your expectations as it did mine.

This little receiver is just as sensitive and selective as the regular 39, thanks to an amazing Sony proprietary chip. I won´t use the word "radio", as this is something in another league, more properly referred to as a "receiver". There is a lot of hype about it being standard issue in US federal prisons. I just like its modern design and seeing "the guts" while I listen to AM radio.

This is a Sony product, which I was not surprised about the quality of the product. It has been used, and it shows in the state of the casing. I wanted a radio that I can see the working parts of,, and this is what I got.

In the feds this radio is in high demand. Not easy to get because inmates we're able to hack it's analog system into being able to pick up the guards "duce's", or 2-Ways. Takes only one battery, and it lasts a LONG time, which is also a highly desirable trait. Gets quite loud as well. These can go for over 100 dollars in stamps, or commissary on the inside from inmate to inmate, though the few joints that will still sell them do it for under 35 bucks.

I am an insomniac. This old school device permits me to listen to am/fm and not disturb my spouse. Easier to deal with in the dark than my IPhone.Love the history behind it.
