  • A Fresh Classic - with discussion

It seems silly for me to even address the quality of 8 1/2, one of the real masterpieces of Italian classic cinema -- which came out just as my fascination with fine film was growing in my years of intellectual birth and hence draws great warmth from me whenever I have a chance to see it. It is one of the dozen DVDs I have in a collection. Although it is about the world of film; it is about "modern" life and the pressures of urban life and layering of responsibilities from work, family, and the drive towards mental and spiritual tranquility. And Criterion always puts out a good product with stimulating special features -- this time a full disc of commentary, etc. This was a good value that provided entertainment and intellectual challenge. If you are engaged with life, you will be engaged with each of the characters in 81/2.

  • 8-1/2 Criterion

Who can argue with the quality of work Criterion puts into classic film re- habilitation? Picture and sound restoration and improvement. And the bonus explanation as to how it got there. You really need to see this release; A/B it against the Art-House version or the original laser disc release. Cha cha cha.

  • coming up for air

I watched 8 1/2 on TV and found that the thing I enjoyed most was what wasn't there. The characters just lived. Kids ran around and played together, they did not just sit alone moving only there thumbs concentrating on some violent video game. Nobody had their life swamped with ads for Medicare suppliment plans, final expense insurance, lasic surgery, and the dreaded "belly fat." Nobody sat for hours staring at "reality" shows having nothing to do with reality. The movie reminded me of the days when people were alive. After I watched it, I turned off the tube, walked in the forest, talked with people, sat in a cafe; basically I went searching for a life I'd misplaced.

  • Classic Film

This is a classic film and one that doesn't follow all the rules. Marcello Mastroiani is fantastic, as always, and perfect as Fellini's alter ego, a director with no direction. It's an important film and one that should not be missed if you enjoy Fellini and/or Mastroiani.
