Synopsis"I'd come from a long ways off and had started a long ways down. But now destiny was about to manifest itself. I felt like it was looking right at me and nobody else." So writes Bob Dylan in Chronicles: Volume One, his remarkable book exploring critical junctures in his life and career. Through Dylan's eyes and open mind, we see Greenwich Village, circa 1961, when he first arrives in Manhattan. Dylan's New York is a magical city of possibilities -- smoky, nightlong parties; literary awakenings; transient loves and unbreakable friendships. Elegiac observations are punctuated by jabs of memories, penetrating and tough. With the book's side trips to New Orleans, Woodstock, Minnesota and points west, Chronicles: Volume One is an intimate and intensely personal recollection of extraordinary times. By turns revealing, poetical, passionate and witty, Chronicles: Volume One is a mesmerizing window on Bob Dylan's thoughts and influences. Dylan's voice is distinctively American: generous of spirit, engaged, fanciful and rhythmic. Utilizing his unparalleled gifts of storytelling and the exquisite expressiveness that are the hallmarks of his music, Bob Dylan turns Chronicles: Volume One into a poignant reflection on life, and the people and places that helped shape the man and the art., "I'd come from a long ways off and had started a long ways down. • life journey that runs deep.

Hid prose is quite fluid. He has historical memory that ties his growth as a professional entertainer to his life. It is now easy to understand how he received the Nobel Prize for literature. An excellent read.

  • Bob Dylan Chronicles

I'm about 1/2 way through and it's a great book so far. Interesting to read about how his privacy was compromised by the press and all the weirdos coming around with no help from the law to make them leave. Bob's a survivor though. Waiting for the next installment.

great book. All the years I've read people analyzing Dylan. Here, you get it straight from the man itself, and he is more interesting and fascinating than all those who critique him. He lets you really get to know him.. His writing is even better than his songwriting.

  • Bob Dylan's Story Told By The Man Himself...

If you're any kind of Dylan Fan, you have to read this book! He gives his story from his first steps in a snowy, cold NYC in 1961,out of a 57 Chevy Impala where he knew absolutely No One. He tells of the characters that populated Greenwich Village clubs from the Cafe Wha to the Gaslight. Onto the burdens and curses that so often accompany Super Stardom and Fame in the following ten years where so many wanted to know him or obsessed about knowing him or only imagined they knew him... Then his description of the recording sessions leading to Oh Mercy and frustrations faced by a mature artist when they have an idea of how their music should sound and the obstacles in achieving that "sound" with a group of musicians at a given time and place... It's a fascinating tale told in great detail by Bob Dylan himself... A Must Read!!!

Superbly written, albeit limited auto-bio. Loved this book, but I wanted more... much more.

  • Bob’s the Best

Love the way Bob Dylan writes—almost as much as I love his songs. This book tells his journey to poetic songwriting.
