About this product

Product Information

'Impeccably researched, superbly told - by far the best book on the SAS in World War II' - Antony Beevor In the summer of 1941, at the height of the war in the Western Desert, a bored and eccentric young officer, David Stirling, came up with a plan that was radical and entirely against the rules- a small undercover unit that would inflict mayhem behind enemy lines. So began the most celebrated and mysterious military organisation in the world- the SAS. Now, the SAS has finally decided to tell its astonishing story. It has opened its secret archives for the first time, granting historian Ben Macintyre full access to a treasure trove of unseen reports, memos, diaries, letters, maps and photographs, as well as free rein to interview surviving Originals and those who knew them. The result is an exhilarating tale of fearlessness and heroism, recklessness and tragedy; of extraordinary men who were willing to take monumental risks. It is a story about the meaning of courage.

  • SAS Rouge Heroes

If you enjoyed the BBC series this just adds another dimension to the experience. I’m not a book worm and it often takes me months to complete a book, this one is well written, I quickly became immersed into the story telling and couldn’t put it down! I finished it over a 3 week period (I work full time) so for me that’s a sign of a good book. Some of the facts are obviously harsh but as a look into WW2 history it’s very good. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Fantastic book telling the stories of th...

Fantastic book telling the stories of the inception of the SAS and their wartime operations. It excels in giving the reader an insight to the characters of the men involved. One of those books you pick up to read the foreword and next thing you know it's dark outside and you still have to walk the dog, make your tea and you are up to page 57.

  • Excellent early history of the SAS

This is well documented history of the origins of what would become the SAS regiment. This urgently told story charts the SAS from its humble beginnings in the “gentlemanly” war against Rommel’s army in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts, through occupied Sicily, Italy, into France and finally Germany itself, by which time the penalty for capture was death. Such heroes. Riveting.

  • Good read

I have always been interested in WW2, mainly the machines and men that stepped up to the plate, ignored the fuddy duddy top brass and got on with it, Mr Stirling was one of those men. In my eyes you were all hero,s including the cooks behind the lines. I wonder what the youth of today would do if something similar happened today ?.

  • Good read

Excellent to read about the beginning of the S.A.S. These heroes are legends, and in my lifetime. A really good read too. Photos bring these "characters" to life

  • Remarkable

Wonderfully researched book that pulls no punches about the remarkable men who made up the S.A.S. Although the book is titled " Rogue Heroes " some of the men of the men come across as deeply flawed bordering on the psychopathic, but nonetheless we owe them a deep debt for their fearless exploits.
