About this product

Product Information

Charlotte Brontë's Gothic romance gets the BBC and Masterpiece Theater treatment in this two-part miniseries. Ruth Wilson plays the title role, one of the most beloved characters in classic fiction, thanks to her independence and intelligence. After a difficult childhood, Jane finds work as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets and falls in love with its mysterious owner, Edward Rochester (Toby Stephens), though things aren't as simple as they seem. Prior to this role, Stephens may have been most recognizable for playing a Bond villain in DIE ANOTHER DAY. But he turns in a performance here that may place him next to Colin Firth's legendary Mr. Darcy in the hearts of viewers.

  • Self-explanatory - the life of a determined young woman survivor in a world.of class consciousness pitting rich against poor.

I now have all 9 productions of this famous book. Only Ciaran Hinds' had Mr. Rochester's dog, PILOT, as a "black and white long-haired lion-like dog" - i.e. a Landseer Newfoundland - I have a brown Newfoundland as my Medical Alert Service Dog, and I have had 4 Newfs in my life. The different breeds used to play PILOT are interesting, but not true to the book. Here, Pilot is played by a Scottish Deerhound, and being of Scottish/Welsh ethnic origins, it was impressive. This one was incredibly profound in the lead roles and Jane's inbred tact and tenacity came to the forepoint in her handling of every barrier placed in front of her throughout her life. Superb acting.

  • Great adaptation of a classic novel, bravo

I don't usually like this type of show. But, the characters starring in this show are so interesting, they draw you in and keep you wanting to see more, especially Ruth Wilson. She is pretty amazing. Toby Stephens was excellent in his role also. This is one of my favorite shows ever now.

  • Rival to Pride & Prejudice

Next to Pride & Prejudice as best love story of all time. 2006 Masterpiece Theatre is our favorite version. Ruth Wilson is VERY believable in the role. Gothic darkness is just right. Like a fine wine. Four episodes. Keep in perm library!

  • My FAVORITE version!!

I LOVE this version of 'Jane Eyre'!! Toby Stephens is the PERFECT Rochester! I'd been waiting for this movie to be reasonably priced on DVD & now I have it. I have also ordered the original 'Jane Eyre' with Orson Welles & Joan Blondell (the first 'JE' movie I'd ever seen & this led me to read the book). Thank you ever so much for having this classic film available at a good price. DVD is in EXCELLENT condition & I am looking forward to sharing this classic with my daughter.

  • MASTERPIECE THEATER'S KANE EYRE

There are two versions of this Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. The Masterpiece Theater version is complete with no missing scenes. The BBC version is just a shortened version of this one. I was happy to finally find the complete one. I could have done without the scene where they are playing with the Ouija board, as I hate the demonic but it is done as a way for Mr Rochester to pick with Blanche and is not passed off as them really engaging with evil spirits. This goes for the gypsyvwoman too. I skip over those scenes when I watch it now. I enjoyed watching Mr Rochester going from a very dark path to the light at the very end. Very faithfully played by all of the characters. DVD arrived in excellent condition although used and it arrived on time.

  • Nostalgic Movie, Great Actors

Had seen this version of Jane Eyre some time ago. After much searching, this site gave a reasonable price. Thank you. There was no real problem with the DVD except that the close captions menu stated that the CC had to be viewed through the TV menu not the DVD player. That was not possible or maybe I just didn't know how to work the CC according to the DVD's instructions. I still gave it 5 stars because it was really nice to see this movie again and the DVD movie portion worked fine.

  • Favorite Jane Eyre Version!

I've read the book and while this version may not be the most accurate, it's characters are so engaging and endearing that this film brings the story to life. The playful banter between the two main characters makes their love story so much more real and believable. I love this version and adore both Ruth Wilson as Jane and Toby Stephens makes a superb Rochester. You can't go wrong with this one if you have a penchant for period films, great acting, and happy endings!

  • Best Adaptation

This is by far the best adaptation of Jane Eyre. It takes the time to develop the characters, and the music does a great job of adding to the effect. The theme music associated with the North Tower makes it so eerie, exactly as it should!

  • Family's favorite version of this movie

The family has watched most of the versions of Jane Eyre and all agree that this version is their favorite. Good acting that brings you into the story rather than watching "actors" in the other versions. But unfortunately, for whatever reason, this is also the hardest version to find a copy of. But we were eventually able to obtain a copy that didn't cost our first born. We are enjoying.
