  • One of the most important characters during the Civil War.

Although I was aware of some aspects of Grant's life, the movie further enlightened me so that I understood that Grant was the "butcher" Union officer that was required to totally defeat the South during the Civil War. While the South had limited resources, the North simply had to expend tremendous amounts of human and material capital in order to shorten the duration of this terrible conflict of our nation's history. There is the real possibility that any other officer other than Grant would have allowed the South to drag the war out for more years with the result of an armistice and a permanent split of the nation. Although the North had many times the resources that the South had, there were practical limits on the amount of casualties the North would have permitted before allowing the South to go it's own way. Grant happened to be that man in history who could push the Northern armies to the point that they were willing to win battles at any cost. That attitude by itself simply wore the South down to the point that it would have been suicide to continue waging war against the North. Even though Grant had failed in non military endeavors throughout his life, even the Presidency, as General of all Union armies he performed excellent. Grant is perhaps the single biggest reason that we have a united nation to this day! This movie made this historical fact quite clear.

  • Excellent Documentary

I have watched this documentary several times comparing it to "Grant" by Ron Chernow. It isn't as complete or detailed as the book but it is an excellent primer for those interested in continuing to learn more about Grant.
