I believe that the reason the Flip camera and Kodak zi8 was abandoned by the manufactures was because of the smartphone revolution. Well, I got news for them. They screwed up when they abandoned these products. Smartphones are great for still photos but they are ok but not great on the videos. These little flip phones put them to shame. They are small, easy to use, always ready to go (If you keep them charged). Don't have to fumble with icons and settings like on the smartphones. I recently needed to use the Flip for a very important family event and even though I had the smartphone I felt it so much better to use the flip. Guess what, I had failed to charge it and had just let it set to long without charging so had to use the the cellphone. When I wanted to zoom in I couldn't hit the right icon while taking the video so I didn't get it the way I wanted it. Also when you need to do a you tube or project video where you need tripod there is no tripod on my 700 dollar smartphone. There is a time and place for everything and the Flip has its place in my life and I will keep it charged and it is so small it is not hard to carry with me. PLEASE FLIP AND ZI8 KEEP WORKING FOR ME. I rely on Flip cameras to film my students speaking. Then I can look back to grade the speeches, and I can put the videos on thumb drives for students to review the speeches themselves. I suddenly was given back-to-back courses where I'd need to film speeches, and that meant I needed a back-up Flip camera -- it's possible I would run out of space or battery on my first Flip camera if I tried to film both classes, and I wouldn't have time to download and recharge in the few minutes between classes. I was able to purchase this second (used) Flip camera affordably. My only complaint is that this particular model has no indicator for how much battery is left. But my class lasts an hour, and the battery goes two hours, so I'm OK. I love Flip cameras. Excellent value portable video camera
Everyone has a smartphone with video capabilities, right? Who needs this Flip? That's what Cisco thought when, soon after they bought Flip, they decided to mothball it. What a shame. It is a small, lightweight, pocket- camera with HD recording and an HDMI output. It is spare on bells and whistles, but you should be spending serious money if you want all that. It has zoom ... and that's about it. The video quality is excellent. Sound capture is tricky, but then it usually is. Close up, it's no problem; audio at a distance can be disappointing, especially outside where natural acoustics are bedeviling. It's charming simplicity of turn-it-on and press-the-red-button to record can't be beat. If you want to mount the camera on a tripod for a nice steady shot, it has the hole for the universal mounting screw on the bottom. Downloading video to a PC is done through a pop-out USB connection on the side. It would have been nice to be able to charge an internal battery that way, but this runs on a couple of AAs (please use rechargeables!). Two hour recording is matched in its battery life. No, there is no removable SD card feature which would have been awesome. But let's realize that this nifty addition will set you back less than $50 on eBay. It's a great buy, worth the small investment if you regularly use video, want something really simple, and still require high quality.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
