About this product

Product Information

Winner of the CILIP Amnesty Honour 2017. Shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2017. Perfect for fans of THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS. This is a beautiful, vivid and deeply moving story about a refugee boy who has spent his entire life living in a detention centre. This novel reminds us all of the importance of freedom, hope, and the power of a story to speak for anyone who's ever struggled to find a safe home. '...a special book' - Morris Gleitzman, author of the acclaimed ONCE series Born in a refugee camp, all Subhi knows of the world is that he's at least 19 fence diamonds high, the nice Jackets never stay long, and at night he dreams that the sea finds its way to his tent, bringing with it unusual treasures. And one day it brings him Jimmie. Carrying a notebook that she's unable to read and wearing a sparrow made out of bone around her neck - both talismans of her family's past and the mother she's lost - Jimmie strikes up an unlikely friendship with Subhi beyond the fence. As he reads aloud the tale of how Jimmie's family came to be, both children discover the importance of their own stories in writing their futures.

Exactly as described, great seller, fast dispatch, I do wish sellers wouldn't use EVRI as I have real problems with them where I live, but it doesn't show the postal service used when selecting postage, but anyways, the order was well packaged, protected, but I do think it got a little squashed during postage, but that's pretty much unavoidable, but I build all my sets, and don't ever plan to sell, so it's ok! Would definitely buy from the seller again! 5*

  • A strong and brilliant novel.

Everyone should read this. It strikes a chord with ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and has similar themes. But this was then, this is now. I don’t want to upset anyone who had relatives who went through the holocaust, of course I don’t, but this is about forgotten people in forgotten camps...they are still there today. When the politicians wanted us to be scared about immigration, these desperate people were all over the news. Now, nothing. They are still there. A deeply moving book. Aimed at the older teen market, but I’m 54 and just wept and laughed and was stunned by the brutal honesty of this book. Endorsed by Amnesty International, for good reason. My copy (orange cover) had a flick-book flying sparrow in the corner :) You can’t get that on a Kindle!! Have just ordered a second ...
