    Zerowater filters expensive and impractical

It's all about the numbers. But numbers of what? Giving you a TLD meter is a great marketing strategy, because they know fear will make you change out the filter when you see higher and higher numbers. The problem is that these numbers are arbitrary. My crappy San Diego tap water reads a whopping .542. First day zerowater filters read .001. A new Brita filter reads . 584! Is the Brita adding contaminants? Of course not. Visual inspection of the filtered Brita water reveals charcoal dust swirling around (the same good stuff zerowater also places in their filters, along with absorbent beads). Your TLD meter is only providing exactly what the acronym stands for: Total Dissolved Solids. They know you aren't going to run out and buy a $4,000 chemical assay system, or send for expensive analysis to evaluate your water. Fear of the unknown will prompt you to buy another $12 filter - more or less frequent - depending if you live in over-populated areas with crappy water, or pristine areas with lots of rainfall, and less population (that's the way it works). Brita's are the cheapest filter now, because it doesn't filter as many things out. Zerowater is still more affordable than complex reverse osmosis system. These complicated systems could provide the best filter water, however at great expense (not to mention waste water, and eventual leaks, because of all the unreliable connections). Zerowater filters work by ionic attraction to thousands of tiny beads providing large surface area for the stuff in your water to stick to; combined with typical activated charcoal. TLD readings increase as the ability of the beads to provide adequate surface area decreases from use (which could be as little a one week, like here in Carlsbad, Ca!). No one but Zerowater has a filter that sucks everything out of your water and reads .001 on day one. So they can charge whatever the market will bear for now. But this can change quite rapidly, depending on how many solids are in your water. But a more important question not answered is WHAT are those solids? SOme solids are beneficial. Here's what the marketing people for each system won't tell you because they use statistical data which is highly subjective to the parameters used to collect the data, and use the results to their advantage. It's actually much simpler. Based on what you get (lower numbers) for what you spend, let's compare: The most expensive is bottled water (not to mention how it impacts the environment) at .001. Next, home delivery, with an average reading of .008. Then coin machine dispensers at about .008 TLD's. Zerowater is next, .001 TLD's. Brita is the cheapest, reading about .012 once the charcoal particles are cleaned out (which are not harmful, remember). Or you can just drink tap water. Not an option where I live, unless you have a death wish.

  • Best way to filter water for drinking

These filters are used in the Zero pitcher - as well as the Zero Water "water cooler" bottle. They are the best - and have never let us down - last aprox 6 moths between changes - and provide many, many gallons of pure water for our household consumption. OUTSTANDING value / per gallon.

Haven't used any refills yet as I just bought the pitcher, but I will use them. What an eye-opener to see just how much unwanted particles are in my tap water. Good, clean, safe water now and I'll be changing these filters regularly.

  • Zero water filter is the winner

Zero water is in my opinion the best water filtering system for small amounts of filtered water. I don't buy bottled water anymore . Good for the environment, good for my budget and the water tastes great. Win, win, win situation.

Best low-cost filter system that you can buy! You can really taste the difference=) absolutely love them and will not switch to anything else

  • Easy to install into the pitcher, screws right in. No need to clean them, just throw them away when they no longer filter properly.

  • Saves me money

I have a very expensive filter and I use this for a pre-filter. I filter the water in these than I pore the water in my other filter. It's been saving me a lot of money.
