Confusing language by Fender, but great parlor size guitar for the money.
I was shopping for another 3/4 size acoustic to keep handy in my office. I found the Fender Redondo MINI and everything seemed good to go until I saw this Sonoran MINI at the same price point. Both based on very similar full size models, I assumed the “MINI” was Fender’s way of designating a 3/4 size acoustic. The Sonoran looked better in photographs (has a pickguard and the name just sounds better) so I bought it. I should have done some more research because this IS NOT A 3/4 SIZED GUITAR. It’s just a standard parlor size with a 14th fret joint. Originally this was a huge disappointment because the size is not even close to a 3/4 and that was my main reason for purchasing.
Admittedly, this is all my own fault for making assumptions..
But from the perspective of a new unique looking parlor guitar, the Sonoran is a beautifully crafted little player. The quality and finish are honestly unbelievable at this price point. The wood and actual finish seem high quality. The fretwork is above average at this price and the sound is… frankly perfect.
This has ended up serving as my primary acoustic as opposed to being a toss around novelty.
The only negatives I can say about this guitar:
-Truss rod was completely loose on delivery. There’s nothing broken about it, but the action was super high and it was unplayable without a lot of adjustment.
-Mine had a small clearcoat flaw on the rosewood (side) that looks like some wrinkles or a fingerprint. You REALLY have to look for it. But the fact that this is the only notable flaw on the entire guitar at this price is the impressive part. You can also tell how thin the finish is from this spot, which is a bonus to me.
Overall-
If you’re looking for a great PARLOR sized acoustic and OK with the anti-traditional look of having a Strat headstock.. give the Sonoran a try! This thing is a contender regardless of the price point you’re shopping.
And speaking of price points, my Sonoran sounds better and feels better and seems to be in another league of craftsmanship compared to Recording King, Ibanez, and Luna.
edit: I’ve attached photos of the Sonoran next to a 3/4 sized mahogany Luna Safari for size reference
