Product Information

The story of how Walt Disney courted P.L. Travers into letting him option the rights to MARY POPPINS is brought to the screen in this non-fiction drama starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, and Colin Farrell. A doting father, Walt Disney (Hanks) promises his adoring daughters that he will bring their favorite fictional nanny Mary Poppins to the big screen. Little does Walt realize that surly author P.L. Travers has no intention of seeing her most famous creation bastardized for moviegoers, a fact that makes keeping his promise a difficult endeavor. Years later, however, when Travers' book sales begin to slow, dwindling finances drive her to schedule a meeting with Disney to discuss the film rights to the beloved story. For two weeks in 1961, a determined Disney does his absolute best to convince Travers that the film version of MARY POPPINS will be a wondrous and respectful adaptation, meanwhile the author only grows more convinced that she has made the right move in preventing the proposed film adaptation. Later, just when it begins to appear that the rights to MARY POPPINS have slipped through his fingers, the ingenious Disney reflects back on his childhood, and realizes that a sensitive chapter from Travers' youth could be the key to clinching the deal. Bradley Whitford, Paul Giamatti, and Jason Schwartzman co-star.

    Very well researched

    It is a wonderfully produced movie. I think the people who made it did a great job of researching Walt Disney. It was insightful and redeeming as Disney could have just ditched the whole project (as bad as he and his staff were treated by the author) but he stuck with it and gave us a wonderful film. I remember our mother and our aunt taking my sister and I to the theater to see it - great memory, as were ALL Disney films we saw as children!!!

    Hanks and Thompson Are Fantastic!

    I loved this film! As a huge Walt Disney and Mary Poppins fan, I was captivated by this true story of how that beloved film was brought to the big screen. Hanks and Thompson are fantastic in their roles of Walt Disney and P.L. Travers, respectively. It was fascinating to see the interaction of these two characters, specifically, but with the Sherman Brothers (Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak), who composed the music for many of Disney's films, Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford), who wrote the script, and Ralph (Paul Giamatti), who served as Travers' personal chauffeur. Interspersed with this main story, we are also treated to flashbacks of Travers' difficult childhood in Allora, Queensland, Australia, and the true inspiration behind Mary Poppins. If you are a fan of this Disney classic, you must see the "behind-the-scenes" story of how it came to life. Two thumbs way up!

    Surprisingly good!

    A surprisingly good movie. I did not expect to like this...I had not seen Mary Poppins prior to seeing Saving Mr. Banks (but I did watch it afterwards). I like to think that Walt Disney was at a least like the way he was presented by Tom Hanks. Wonderful acting from top to bottom....the cast was first rate. The scene "Let's go fly a kite" is memorable.
