Good quality, keeps the chain taught on bumps, and goes well with the rest of the components.

Going to a new drive train type is a bit unsettling. In choosing an internal gear rear cub, I considered just using the existing Ultegra derailleur and locking the shifter into the correct location. I knew there was probably a better way to allow the wheel to be removed for maintenance and such. This small and light-weight chain tensioner does the trick really well. I've only ridden it a couple of hundred miles so far, on a variety of pavement and packed dirt. It's doing its job just fine.

    Don't Buy It!

Put this on a Catrike Trail since I installed a Nuvinci N360 and kept the front derailleur and chainrings.. Spring promptly broke within minutes leaving the tensioner dangling and not enough tension in the chain to allow shifting from the 30t to the bigger ones. All work was done by an experienced mechanic at the LBS. Will just use the old rear derailleur as a tensioner. Stay away from it.

  • Strong tensioner

I have purchased 4 tensioners in the mission to make a single speed, 20" wheeled downhill ebike. The chain tensioner has been the hardest part. Long travel rear suspension would kick chains all the time. This Alfine tensioner has a very rigid spring, and keeps my chain on finally. Its not perfect, though. it has very little chain line adjustment, it is likely you will run into a problem with that, if you run your rear cog anywhere from the middle to the outside of the cartridge. This is for middle to inside of the cartridge. The cogs are plastic, not alloy. Otherwise its great!

  • Make sure it's compatible

Since there is no lateral adjustment on this it will only work for specific Shimano single speed hubs and is, unfortunately, not appropriate for most single speed conversions. It's a shame as it's a nice quality component. I don't know why manufacturers haven't noticed that there's a void/need for this that's currently only filled by a few very high end pieces of kit.

  • Full suspension capable tensioner

I really like this tensioner which seems to work for a Nexus 3 speed disc Hub really well. The chain line has stated is pretty far in but is workable with Shimano IGH hubs and single speed sprockets. Shimano specs a maximum 20t rear cog but I suspect a 22t would work. This dual pulley system can gather more chain than the Surly singleater (which is better for hardtails and has much more chainline adjustment) at the same time engaging more teeth on the sprocket

  • LWB recumbent with e-assist

Using it with a nuvinci 380 ugh and a heavy duty 7 speed e-bike chain to drive a 1500 watt Bafang mid drive motor on my long wheelbase RANS stratus xp recumbent as well as my RANS dynamics trail semi-recumbent mountain bike (Same exact e-assist setup) and have had no problems with it at all. The only one that’s better is the one that’s for the Rohloff ugh. It’s a lot more money

  • Adjust only with shims, great for a shop but only experienced bike mechanics can figure that out. Not novice friendly.

Very well made with tight machine work

  • Great tensioner

It supply's great tension to the chain. No slipping of teeth at all, ever again! Great construction and a great value

  • Works great!

Works really well--no chain slap even on gravel, very easy to set up and get aligned with included washers

  • Fair price and quality.

It does what it is supposed to and looks decent. I feel like it is a little heavier than nessesary and double pulleys produce a little drag but no more than regular derailier I suppose.
