    Although Perestroika was written in the late eighties, it is a valuable insight to the world of Socialism from one of the world's leading socialists. You can get an inside view of the struggles and politics of the USSR through Gorbachev. The USSR had been declining in production and social order over a period of time. Without major changes, a collapse was forthcoming. The existing regime was complacent and corrupt thru years of neglect and unaccountability. Mr. Gorbachev wanted to sincerely make the painful yet necessary changes. It was a difficult task with a mix of support and antagonists. He knew that democratic formulas needed to be implemented in the social and economic areas and all across the union.
